BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include <br />scope. size. and cost) <br /> <br />The Central Artery Tunnel, a.k.a. the Big Dig project, is the biggest and <br />most expensive public works program in U.S. history. It will be <br />accompanied by 250 acres of new parks and open space, including three <br />new downtown parks along a linear path. At four acres, the Wharf District <br />Parks are the largest. They will occupy a five-block waterfront area <br />extending between Christopher Columbus Park and High Street. <br /> <br />After participating in an international design competition, EDAW's <br />preliminary "City Green/Green City" concept won the project. The mission <br />of the design team - 10 firms led by EDAW - in subsequent work was to <br />create a waterfront destination that is uniquely "of Boston," enjoyable for <br />both residents and visitors. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Beginning in March 2003, EDAW held a series of town hall-style meetings <br />to gather public input. The final design marries aspects of Boston's social <br />and cultural character with local maritime history and shoreline evolution. <br />Through frugal resource and energy consumption, contribution to air and <br />water quality and the use of native and recycled construction materials, <br />the Wharf District Parks also endeavor to set a new benchmark for social <br />and environmental integrity in the 21st century. <br /> <br />c.
