In the 20th cenrury the area has been impacted by a hurricane on the average of once every three years. The Miami Dade Hurricane Evacuation Plan reports that 59 hurricanes have made land fal1. Over 40%, or 24 storms, were ranked as Category ill and six storms reached strengths of Category IV. In total the hurricanes have claimed 1,910 lives. <<!II - - .. The City of Sunny Isles Beach is located within the Coastal High Hazard Area (CHHA). Storm warnings originate in the National Hurricane Center and the information is rdayed to the Miami Dade Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
