Hurricane Evacuation <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />The Counties of Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach in southeastern Florida have experienced a greater <br />number of intense hurricanes than any other region. In the 20th cenrury the area has been impacted <br />by a hurricane on the average of once every three years. The Miami Dade Hurricane Evacuation <br />Plan reports that 59 hurricanes have made land fal1. Over 40%, or 24 storms, were ranked as <br />Category ill and six storms reached strengths of Category IV. In total the hurricanes have claimed <br />1,910 lives. <br /> <br /><<!II <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />The City of Sunny Isles Beach is located within the Coastal High Hazard Area (CHHA). Storm <br />warnings originate in the National Hurricane Center and the information is rdayed to the Miami <br />Dade Office of Emergency Management (OEM). The OEM is responsible for conducting <br />emergency preparedness and response and recovery within the County. The OEM along with the <br />South Florida Water Management District delineates evacuation zones for hurricanes of Categories <br />one through five. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />Hurricane Characteristics <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />Hurricanes and tropical storms impacting southeastern Florida generally originate in the Atlantic <br />cyclonic basin near the African west coast or the western Caribbean. They develop as a result of heat <br />generated and rdeased from the warm ocean waters. The hurricane season typically runs from June <br />to November. Hurricanes are rated according to their strengt:hon the Saffir{Simpson Wmd Velocity <br />Scale.
