Cross Street Bridge, SomelTille, t\IA - Preparation of
plans and specifications to replace the superstructure
and rehabilitate the substructure of this lI5-foot-
long structure crossing active railroad lines in an
urban environment. The project includes
preliminary engineering, highway design, bridge type
studies and sketch plans, and final design.

Massachusetts Highway Department, 1-90/1-93
Project, Section D009C (11/1993 - 10/1996): Task
Lead supervising design of 26 bridges incorporated
\vithin the section of the Central Artery/Tunnel project
at the 1-90/[-93 Interchange, Southbound, at
t\[assachusetts .r\\'enue. Bridge superstructure types
include steel and concrete boxes, clllTed horizontal 1-
beams, precast prestressed concrete butted boxes, and
precast prestressed concrete bulb tees. The work also
includes the underpinning of t\vo existing bridges and
the de\'elopment of slab on pile transition structures to
some of the bridgcs. I\ll bridges are designed for HS20
or HS25 loading and seismic forces. Computer
programs used include BRASS, BSDI, STARDYNE,
and STA,\D III.

SupelTised and participated in the design of the
substructurc of the Interim Viaduct at ,\lbany Street
([V.\S), a 20-span, approximately l800-foot-long
temporary \'iaduct. The IV I\S design was accomplished
in a lO-week accelerated design schedule. The
substructure satisfies several space constraints, to meet
the concerns of the City of Boston Transportation
Department and abutters. Special design details were
dc\'eloped to mcet minimum sidewalk widths of 8 fcet
and the required roadway width for Albany Street traffic.
These details included tapered columns and small-
diameter steel pipe piles. This section of the project was
opened to traffic in August 1997 and will carry traffic
until 2002 rather than the initial l8-month plan.
Contractor claims amounted to less than 10;;) of the
construction budget of S 12 million.

Massachusetts Highway Department, Complex
Bridge Rating On-Call Services Contract (01/1992 -
10/1992): Lead Bridge Engineer in thc rating of the
French King Bridge, which carries Route 2 over the

Connecticut Ri\'er bet\veen Gill and ElTing, t\L-\. This is
a three-span, continuous spandrel truss bridgc
approximately 900 feet long. Responsibilities included
dc\'eloping a live-load distribution and membcr propcrty
program, as well as the manual and computerized rating
of the slab, stringers, floor beams, and truss members of
this bridge for standard A..\SHTO and t\Iassachusetts-
specific truck loads. The computer analysis programs
used include STRUDL, BRI\SS, and Bi\R7. Directed a
team that performed ratings of bridges of various
structural types and complexities under the ovcrall
con tract.

Metropolitan District Commission, Longfellow
Bridge Restoration (04/1988 - 12/1988): As Project
Engineer, directed the multi-company inspection and
rating of this l800-foot-Iong, ll-ribbed-arch-span bridge
over the Charles River, for which Stone & \,\'ebster
completed and filed a report in 1988. SupelTised
inspectors performing \'isual, close-range inspection of
bridge, supplemented when necessary by NDT. \,\'ork
im'olYed the use of a barge with articulating personnel
lifts. Dirccted preparation of the condition assessment,
bridge rating report, and cost estimates to rehabilitate
this his toric landmark. l\ [ore than 10,000 structural steel
members were inspected.

SHAW ENVIRONMENTAL.
