<br />Royal Park Bridge, Bridgehead Design - West
<br />Palm Beach, FL
<br />During the planning and design of the new $50 million
<br />Royal Park Bridge connecting the historic Town of Palm
<br />Beach with the City of West Palm Beach, Kimley-Horn
<br />faced many challenges in creating a gateway to these two
<br />great cities. An important achievement in this project was
<br />facilitating consensus among a complex group of
<br />stakeholders, including the Town of Palm Beach, the City
<br />of West Palm Beach, the design commission for downtown
<br />West Palm Beach, FDOT, and the general public. Kimley-
<br />Horn worked with these stakeholders to design two parks
<br />on each side of the bridge, with the aim of integrating the
<br />structure into the fabric of the two communities. A key
<br />component of this project is a multiuse, 24-foot
<br />recreational path on the West Palm Beach side of the
<br />bridge. This path allows pedestrians and cyclists to travel
<br />safely beneath the arched main bridge without having to
<br />navigate through the busy roadway above, To further
<br />integrate the bridge into the existing area, more than a
<br />dozen 50 to 100-foot specimen canopy trees were floated
<br />on a barge to the site and crane-lifted into place.
