State Rd. 5 - Highway Beautification Funded Grant Application This project consists of Highway Beautification for the road right -of -ways of State Road 5 (U.S. 1) in the City of Marathon, which exists as one of the most historically significant locations in the Florida Keys. The length of the project is approximately two tenths of a mile at each location at the outermost points of the City. To the East at Grassy Key, MM60, just to the western limit of Tom's Harbor Bridge, the City entry point traveling west towards Key West. The other location is to the west of Knights Key, MM47, just to the eastern limit of the Seven Mile Bridge, the City entry point traveling east towards Miami. ,RIDA DEPARTMENT ,PORTATION (FDOT) DISTRICT VI Client: City of Marathon Contact Information: Mayor Robert K. Miller 11090 Overseas Highway Marathon, FL 33050 Project Date: 2001 -2002 Project Cost: $200,000 Grant Total State Road 5 (U.S.1) is the only roadway linking the Florida Keys to the mainland. It is the most prominent Key Personnel: roadway in Monroe County and historically depicts the Tammy Cook, RLA, ASLA location of the Flagler Railroad. The historic aspect of Bruce Ora, RLA this project was a significant component of its design Carrie Steinbaum, RLA, ASLA development. The incorporation of historic railroad structures at these City entry points were intended to highlight the importance that the Flagler Railroad played toward the growth and development of the City of Marathon. With the extension of the Heritage Trail along this route, visitors to Marathon will have an opportunity to share in the history of Marathon as interpretive railroad landmark locations are planned along the thirteen mile stretch along (U.S. 1) within the City limits.
