The design premise was derived by using a combina- tion of the mission of Miami Dade College - to provide accessible, affordable, high- quality education by keeping the learner's needs at the center of the decision-making and working in partnership with its dynamic, multicultural community and the architec- tural vocabulary already used throughout the campus. This Arts and Sciences building houses approximately 38,000 sq. ft. of academic space, The basic program requirements were aggressive and challeng- ing because of the limited building space and budget. The building needed to be gutted so that the new spaces could be developed and necessary infrastructure i ncor- porated to make the building meet stringent codes and extensive programmatic requirements. Alleguez Architecture, Inc. The renovated building is a technologically advanced facility with integrated learning systems incorporated through- out and is linked to the central campus network. The School of Arts and Letters provides instruction in its Art Studio on the third floor. The first floor houses the Gallery - a multipurpose room for theater productions, musical recitals and book presentations - and the choral music room with sound-proof instrumental practice space. Construction of partitions and ceilings in the Gallery, multipurpose room, control room, and choral and music rooms provide acoustical isolation, To facilitate required ventilation and exhaust systems, the fourth floor is dedicated to the sciences, including labs for biology, chemistry, and physics and engineering. ........
