Maas, Chief of Police <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />9/1512011 <br /> <br />RE: <br /> <br />Approval, authorizing the Chief of Police to Expend up to <br />$113,814.99 from the Federal Forfeiture (DOJ) Funds for the <br />Purchase of Miscellaneous Law Enforcement Equipment and <br />Technology (see attached). <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br /> <br />It is recommended that the City Commission approve the expenditure of partial <br />forfeiture funds, previously awarded to the Police Department as the results of <br />investigative participation in forfeiture and seizure cases. These funds are <br />permissible by law to be spent for purchases of police equipment and other law <br />enforcement activities. It is requested that we be permitted to utilize up to <br />$113,814.99 of said funds on deposit for such purpose. <br /> <br />REASONS: <br /> <br />The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department actively participates in DEA and FBI / <br />HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) Initiative Groups that conduct <br />numerous ongoing proactive investigations and has a need for the attached <br />listed equipment. <br /> <br />ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: <br /> <br />One of the benefits of participating in and providing personnel into high intensity <br />narcotics investigations is the sharing of confiscated proceeds for the <br />enhancement of law enforcement.
