Summary Minutes: Regular City Commission Meeting November 17,2011

Sunny Isles Beach, Florida

13B. Resident Alan Collins said he was walking down the beach and he noticed new brown and
black garbage cans, and there are hundreds of them scattered all along the beach, and he
went down to the other part of the beach where there are nice new metal ones that are
transparent. He feels that the City's cans are intrusive and ugly, and there are so many of
them, one every ten feet, there is no coordination to it, no beauty to it, it is just random, why
did we do that, why not new metal ones. City Manager Cohen said the number of trash cans
on the beach is actually dictated by the County and they tell us how many cans they want.
The placement of them, the spacing of them is also dictated by the County and it is based on
the actual usage of each of the individual cans, and so those that generate more garbage will
have closer spacing with other cans. A decision was made some time ago to have cans that
hid the garbage and covers it so that during high wind conditions which we are often subject
to on the beach, garbage would not come flying out of the cans. At this time there are no
metal cans left on the beaches ofthe City, there might very well be at Haulover. But the City
made a decision to go aesthetically with the same design throughout the entire beach. The
two colors that we have right now, and we might end up going with all one color at some
point, most of them are sand colors. The dark blue ones are placed in front of each of the
beach access points, and so it is just a very easy visual for people walking the beach to know
here is a point where I can cut over to Collins A venue.

14.
