HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD RESOLUTION NO. 2008 -0_ <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />BOARD OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, <br />SUPPORTING THE CONCEPT OF THE RECONSTRUCTION <br />AND DESIGN OF THE NEWPORT FISHING PIER; <br />PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, the property known as the Newport Fishing Pier (the "Pier ") located at <br />16701 Collins Avenue was originally built in 1936 and has long been a major attraction for local <br />residents and tourists, attracting over one million visitors; and <br />WHEREAS, the Pier was designated as a historic site by the Miami -Dade County <br />Historic Preservation Board on January 21, 1982, and re- designated as a historic site by the <br />Sunny Isles Beach Historic Preservation Board on June 6, 2005, and by the City Commission on <br />July 14, 2005, and <br />WHEREAS, the Pier experienced major structural damage during Hurricane Wilma in <br />2005, and has been closed to the public due to unsafe conditions; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach (the "City ") recently entered into a <br />public /private partnership with Newport Operating Corporation to share certain costs for the <br />design, removal and replacement of the entire Pier, both east and west of the erosion control line; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the City will control the entire project, but will provide Newport Operating <br />Corporation and its President Dr. Robert M. Cornfeld, with an opportunity to provide input on the <br />final design; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Manager reported on the project status to the City's Historic <br />Preservation Board at its meeting held on April 15, 2008, at which time the City's engineering <br />consultants presented architectural renderings for the project. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />BOARD OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. Incorporation of Recitals. The foregoing recital paragraphs are hereby ratified <br />and confirmed as being true and the same are hereby made part of this Resolution. <br />Section 2. Expression of Support. The Historic Preservation Board of the City of Sunny <br />Isles Beach hereby supports the concept of the reconstruction and design of the Pier, with the <br />following recommendations: <br />(a) that the Pier be a barrier -free facility; <br />(b) that the Pier be functionally aesthetic; <br />(c) that concrete dyed brown be used to make the Pier's structure resemble wood; <br />Resolution No. 2008 - Newport Fishing Pier Pagc I of 2 <br />
