Summary Minutes: Special City Commission Meeting September 22, 2009
Second Budget Hearing
Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
that staff address this once again. She said the thought behind the rendering is good, the fact
that you have all the different sports activities. However, she feels that you should get the
opinion of the person who is going to do the artwork because they might be able to, without
any additional expenses, embellish upon this and make it a little more outstanding.
Mayor Edelcup said that the rendering is kind of dull because there is no contrast, but on the
other hand he thinks we are looking for ideas more than anything else and he would like to
couch those ideas by saying he doesn't think the City should be spending a lot of money to
accomplish this because it is embellishing on something we already have and not necessarily
contributing a lot to the benefit of the community. However, he would be in favor of looking
at something that maybe staff could come up with, maybe more of a mural with a multicolor
type of thing. He likes the concept of showing each of the sports but he would like to see
uniformed figures however, he is hoping that we can accomplish something with our own
staff and not hire consultants or professional people to accomplish this. Mayor Edelcup
reiterated that it would be nice to have a mural type of thing there but he doesn't want to see
the City spending a lot of its resources with the economy the way it is. If we can get
something that staff can accomplish without much cost to the City other than materials, then
that would be fine, and Commissioner Brezin agreed and said to bring suggestions back to
the Commission. City Manager Conner said that we have some very creative staff and they
will try to pull something together, some suggestions, and putting the approximate cost with
each one, and knowing that one of the themes is to try to keep it very affordable.
4E. Add -On:
Discussion on an Update on the Fishing Pier.
Action: City Manager Conner said we received an email today from Jimmy Christoff who is
the head of the team that we met at DEP in Tallahassee to see if we couldn't accomplish the
goals that the Commission wanted on the Pier. He read it into the record "Jeff looked at the
current lease and I have discussed with Bud and the result is that we are fine with allowing
the "empty space" currently in the leased area to be reapportioned for a walkway to bypass
the dining room and also a second story for use as a lifeguard facility." (Jeff and Bud are
team members). Mayor Edelcup asked who we can send up there right now to get the permit,
let's not wait too long. City Manager Conner said that is the next step, and having gotten this
is just incredible, from this point forward we are very confident. Mayor Edelcup said in City
Manager Conner's absence, will somebody be following through as to how soon we can get
the necessary permits, and City Manager Conner said that he has already had a discussion
with both of the consultants on both sides working this process and City Attorney Ottinot
will also be in the loop.
5.
