ATTACHMENT A
•
•
PROGRAM NARRATIVE
Jurisdiction Name: Sunny Isles Beach Contact Person: Capt. Michael A. Grandinetti
Address: 18070 Collins Avenue Contact Numbers: O (305) 792-1857
Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160 F (305) 792-1653
Program Area: School Resource Officer Program Dates: 10/01/12 through 09/30/13
Program Name: School Resource Officer Target Population: School aged youth
Problem Identification
The City of Sunny Isles Beach is home to the Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Bch K-8
School. It is a school with a population of over 1,800 kids, and over 1,200 of those children are
in the elementary school age group (K-5). The need for safety education is enormous and
children of that age group are more receptive to visual aids.
Currently, a school resource officer (SRO) is assigned to the school. She teaches safety tips
to the kids grades K-5. The information is broken down and then organized into four
categories (car safety, pedestrian safety, gun safety, and what to do when you heed help).
Many of the children are from different countries and speak different language. This makes
visual aids all the more important. Our SRO often uses posters, books, and other teaching
tools to ensure that the children understand the safety tips and are excited about learning.
Program Description
By utilizing FY2013 Byrne grant funds, the department would be able to provide the SRO with
a number of teaching tools for the Kid Safety Class. Among these tools are workbooks that
test the children's knowledge and help determine what areas to focus on. In addition, an
excellent visual aid is a life size poster with a ruler on either side educating children about who
needs to be in a booster seat. It is not just the use of a seatbelt that saves lives but rather its
proper use. This poster aid makes it clear to the children in a way they understand.
The younger kids are motivated by small giveaways which consist of Bookmarks, Goodie Bags,
Activity Books, Glow Wrist Bands, Crayons and Brain Pencil Erasers. These items all have a safety
tip inscribed that serves to remind the kids about what they've learned.
