Indeed, the crime of human trafficking destroys lives around the world and is present in
every country especially in tourist communities, resulting in a $150 billion dollar a year industry.
Forced labor, commercial sexual exploitation and involuntary domestic servitude have been
found to exist within Miami-Dade County. To combat Human Trafficking, the Board of County
Commissioners recently adopted an ordinance requiring the posting of Human Trafficking
i
awareness signs at adult entertainment clubs and massage parlors. The purpose of this ordinance
is to make such businesses more responsible in combating Human Trafficking. I certainly believe
that businesses can do more to combat Human Trafficking. For example,'in March 2016, Uber
became the first ride-sharing company to sign a pledge issued by the group ECPAT (Ending
Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) to adopt
business principles that will help prevent human trafficking.
The City of Sunny Isles Beach wishes to maintain collaborative relations with other
governmental agencies and adopt positions of legislative advocacy to prevent Human Trafficking
within Miami-Dade County. As such, I ask my colleagues on the City Commission to approve
this Resolution to encourage vehicle for hire companies such as Lyft and taxi companies as well
as short-term vacation rental companies such as Airbnb and local hotels to help prevent Human
Trafficking by adopting business principles to learn what steps to take if they suspect their
businesses are being used to facilitate Human Trafficking.
