STANDARD FORM 330 (REV. 312013) PAGE 3
(3) BRIEF DESCRIPTION (Brief Scope, size, cost, etc.) AND SPECIFIC ROLE Check if project performed with current firm
Sea Turtle Specialist - Since 1978 the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the
conservation of endangered threatened sea turtle species. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas for three sea turtle
species: loggerhead (Caretta caretta), green (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea). THE BCEPD is
especially concerned about any environmental effects related to beach nourishment projects, so they have maintained the sea
turtle conservation program in non-nourishment years to provide a continuous monitoring scheme which can assess long term
trends as well as short-term impacts. In addition to statutory requirements, this project aims to relocate nests deposited in high risk
areas, survey sea turtle nesting patterns to document historical trends and assess anthropogenic factors affecting these, assess
nesting success and hatching success, to dispose of sea turtle carcasses and respond to strandings and other emergencias, and
to inform and educate the public about sea turtlesand their conservation. Mr. Lopez Padierna conducted sea turtle nesting surveys
on Fort Lauderdale Beach during the 2009 nesting season. Surveys included driving ATVs on the beach, searching for turtle
crawls on the beach, determining if they were false crawls or actual nesting activities, identifying the species of turtle that made the
crawl and marking of nests. Nests that were laid in high risk locations were relocated to safer locations. During hatching season
Mr. Lopez Padierna conducted hatching success surveys by excavating nests after hatchlings had emerged to determine the
number of eggs deposited, the number that successfully hatched, and the capture and release of hatchling which might not have
emerged from the nest.
Size: 15 miles of beach
Cost: $160,000 (estimated)

104
