Village of EsteroSunny Isles Beach RFQ 18-02-01 | Marine and Coastal Professional Engineering Consulting Services
continuous accuracies of less than three (3) feet. RTK GPS technology for monitoring water levels or tides during the course of data collection is employed as required for the specific survey. For vessel navigation and data collection / storage, the Coastal Oceanographics “Hypack” system is used. Horizontal positioning checks are conducted at the beginning and end of each day using fixed objects or monuments of verified position. If specified for a project, such as that relating to the State Beach Monitoring Program, beach profile survey protocol will follow the Monitoring Standards for Beach Erosion Control Projects developed by the State of Florida Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems (BBCS). SDI also has the expertise and equipment resources to perform remote sensing surveys including side scan sonar, magnetometer and sub-bottom profiling.
Side Scan Sonar Technicians at SDI are also experienced in the field of side scan sonar surveying for efficient mapping of exposed bottom features that may be pertinent to a design or construction project. Side scan sonar will produce an acoustic image of the bottom from a digital tow fish operating at high frequency ranges of generally 600kHz/1600kHz. The survey is conducted using an ultra-high resolution EdgeTech Dual Frequency (600kHz/1600kHz) CHIRP Side Scan Sonar System with topside navigation and digital data collection and processing software. Georeferenced acoustic images are collected digitally real-time and translated to digital mosaics in a .tiff format. The system is cable of detecting and mapping exposed bottom features such as exposed rock, vegetation cover, pipeline/cable crossings and manmade debris. This system also enables the rapid location of hazardous debris that might impede navigation in the wake of a storm event. Inlets and harbors are a valuable resource for the supply chain and need to be cleared quickly, efficiently, and positively.
Magnetometry Should there be the potential for submerged and buried obstructions or perhaps items of cultural significance along the City shoreline or borrow areas, SDI will typically use a magnetometer. Magnetometer data can be used to identify and map features of ferrous composition that are either buried or projecting above the seafloor such as manmade debris, cables and pipelines and /or other submerged items that may be impede navigation or impact dredging operations. The survey is conducted using a cesium magnetometer with positioning and heading provided via integrated dual-antenna DGPS with heading accuracy of 0.5 degrees.
Sub-Bottom Profiling Geotechnical studies and pre-dredge planning and design projects often require the support of a sub-bottom profiling survey. Sub-bottom profile data is collected using an EdgeTech Sub-Bottom Profile system operating at low frequency range (2-16 kHz) to maximize penetration into the surface sediments. The sub-bottom profile system will be a portable system that uses a full spectrum CHIRP technology that minimizes multipath and noise effects while achieving high definition image slices of the sub-bottom material characteristics. Depending on sediment characteristics, several meters of penetration should be achieved using this system. As requested, SDI can deploy divers to physically expose, identify and investigate canal banks, seawalls, structures, and/or utilities for any scouring/undercut areas, utility locations or seawall damage in proximity to the bridges. Divers can utilize either water jetting equipment or air sand lifts as required for classification and location, and/or groundtruthing of submerged utilities and structures. SDI survey crews can be onsite during the dive operations to locate the areas both horizontally and vertically using conventional survey and / or RTK GPS methodologies.
Current (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling),
Wave, and Tide Studies SDI has conducted numerous current studies using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) relating to the design of offshore breakwaters and groins, bridge scour investigations, hydraulic / flushing studies, and shore protection projects. Both static mount and dynamic gauges have been used depending on the requirements of the design professional. Studies are conducted using self-recording gauges with capacity to record such data as wave height and direction, current velocity and direction and tide elevation along with temperature and salinity. Gauges can be deployed for short or long-term studies in either shallow or deep water environments.
Sediment Testing and Vibra-CoresSDI has the capacity to perform sediment testing, sediment probes and sediment core sampling. Sediment samples can be extracted using divers equipped with hand coring devices or from the survey launch using ponar grab samplers. Sediment probes are conducted using steel rods or hydraulic jet pump equipment depending on the required depth of penetration. SDI also has a barge equipped with A-frame and vibra-core for shallow water sediment cores. These services may be of value for evaluating sediment characteristics pertaining to dredge projects and for search of sand sources relating to shore protection projects.
23
