Project Manager for Brevard County Mid Reach Beach Restoration Program hardbottom monitoring. Hardbottom epibiota and fishes are being monitored at
four fill areas and one reference area off Brevard County’s Mid Reach. Monitoring data include quantitative photography and visual fish assessments. Data
have been collected annually since 2013 to provide pre-construction information from which to assess potential impacts of the beach construction, which is
expected for 2018. Also contributed to Uniform Mitigation Assessment Methodology analysis leading to design of a mitigation reef. Mitigation reefs were
deployed during summer 2017 and monitored with quantitative photography and visual assessment. Project Cost: $129,080 (billed to date)
Field Scientist and Subject Matter Expert for multiyear monitoring program for the Siesta Key, Florida beach renourishment project. Assessment of
nearshore and offshore hardbottom biological habitats before, during, and after construction. Key expert for scientific data collection, including collecting
close-up photos, video, and in situ repetitive quadrat data to characterize the hardbottom biological communities. Co-authored multiple reports, led statistical
Chief Scientist, Project Manager, Ichthyofaunal Expert, and Chief Statistician for an evaluation of ecological function and mitigation of nearshore hardbottom
in southeast Florida. CSA managed a literature search and synthesis project to identify the area’s key ecological functions of nearshore hardbottom. The
synthesis examined functions of algae, invertebrates, fishes, and marine turtles. CSA worked with a multi-agency Technical Advisory Committee to
investigate how specific ecological functions vary with respect to water depth in the nearshore environment. After the information gathering phase of the
project, CSA conducted assessments of ecological function by sampling biota over time and across a gradient of water depths at artificial and natural
hardbottom features in two areas of Palm Beach County: Singer Island and Ocean Ridge. The experimental design consisted of three categorical factors:
depth, reef, and survey. During the six field surveys, epibiota were assessed for percent cover from 0.5 m-2 quadrats; macroalgae and associated
invertebrates were suction-sampled for estimating species richness and abundance. Microhabitat use by newly settled fishes was assessed by visual survey
and 0.3 m-2 photo quadrats, and newly settled fishes were captured with hand nets for identification. Visual transects for sea turtles were used to determine
the presence and abundance of sea turtle species. In-depth statistical analysis accompanied the data in a comprehensive report. Project Cost: $412,523.
Venice Beach Nourishment Project Venice, Florida Professional Services Construction (If applicable)
2013
(3) Brief Description (Brief Scope, Size, Cost, etc.) and Specific Role x Check if project performed with current firm
Chief Scientist and Project Manager responsible for successful completion of all tasks, data analysis, and reports for monitoring of hardbottom adjacent to
fill and borrow areas for a beach nourishment project offshore Venice, Florida. The purpose of the monitoring program was to assess 1) how the equilibrium
toe-of-fill for the proposed project performs compared with the predictions, and 2) possible direct and indirect impacts to biota. Hardbottom features that
support epibiotic assemblages occurring near the offshore borrow sites and nearshore fill sites were monitored for impacts related to sedimentation,
turbidity, and other dredge-related stressors. CSA also monitored proposed corridors for dredging pipelines prior to dredging to ensure the pipelines would
not directly contact hardbottom and after dredging to document any impacts that may have occurred. In addition, CSA was responsible for pre-construction
monitoring of shorebirds and migratory seabirds and their behavioral activity and nests. CSA evaluated the monitoring data and prepared reports that
presented monitoring results and compared predicted versus actual impacts. CSA also monitored the nearshore artificial mitigation reef constructed offshore
of Venice Beach for colonization and community stabilization following construction. Project Cost: $1,322,197.
