CONSULTING ENGINEERING SERVICES FOR
Golden Shores Utility Undergrounding and Roadway Improvements
D–3IWOP41002.18w_Sunny Isles Beach Golden Shores Undergrounding.indd
3 Communication. A high level of communication between all parties involved, including the engineering design
and construction teams, utility providers, City staff, City Commission, and the City residents is essential.
Communication needs to be two-way so that the needs of all parties can be carefully considered and worked
into the design.
3 Staff Continuity. From planning to construction—continuity of consultant staff is a must. Our project manager will
be your point of contact throughout the project, from start to finish.
3 Strong Teaming Partners. Kimley-Horn has teamed with a number of local firms on a variety of projects in the
past. For this assignment, we have partnered with Longitude, Universal, and Waypoint to provide a variety of
niche services that will prove invaluable to the City.
3 Provide Community Outreach. Providing information about a project to the community can be as important as
the design of that project. For this project we’ve partnered with Media Relations Group (MRG) who can prepare
all exhibits/media, present to the community, or simply provide support for the City of Sunny Isles Beach staff in
their normal outreach efforts.
3 Think Big Picture. We will look beyond the project: What are the long-term goals? What are the long-term
opportunities for community enhancement? We will help the City identify opportunities to save money by cost
sharing restoration efforts with other infrastructure improvements.
3 Be Flexible. We understand schedules change (accelerated or delayed), project scopes change, and we must
be prepared to deal with these changes. Our team is available at all times for any size task and can readily adapt
and scale our services to the task at hand.
Keeping these key characteristics in mind, we offer below our approach to undergrounding the overhead utilities in the
City of Sunny Isles Beach.
Data Collection
During the initial stage of the project, we will focus efforts on collecting existing information on the 2.5 pole-miles of
overhead infrastructure from FPL, AT&T, Atlantic Broadband, and others as appropriate so we can gain a detailed
understanding of the electric, telephone, and cable communications transmission and distribution system on a macro
scale. This information will guide the major decisions on where feeders and trunk lines should be laid, as well as helping to
identify opportunities to achieve efficiencies in routing.
Kimley-Horn will coordinate and conduct project surveys, geotechnical investigations, and utility soft digs as required to
gather vital information to be used during this phase of the project. Because much of the construction is below ground,
this investigative information will be extremely valuable to obtain before detailed design begins and construction drawings
are prepared.
We will engage our subconsultant Longitude to collect topographic survey data which will initiate FPL’s design process
and inform the placement of electrical equipment such as transformers and switch cabinets. We will also call on Universal
to perform geotechnical investigation of the existing soils, which will assist the development of new roadway sections,
landscape, and construction technique.
Detailed Design
It has been our experience that no matter the size or complexity of any given task, careful consideration of all project
issues, details, and goals of the City at the onset of the detailed design phase is essential to the successful execution of
the project that exceeds the City’s expectations. To that end, Kimley-Horn will begin with a comprehensive team effort to
work with the City and the various stakeholders during the design phase for the Golden Shores Undergrounding.
We have assembled a team of proven professionals to ensure that the design schedule can be met as agreed upon early
on. Based on our experience, no other consultant team has the extensive undergrounding knowledge than Kimley-Horn.
