September 20, 2018 RE: Declaring September 2018 Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month RECOMMENDATION: This Resolution is presented for your consideration and approval. REASONS: According the American Cancer Society, after accidents, pediatric (childhood cancer) is the second leading cause of death among children and adolescents (ages 1 to 14 years) in the United States. In 2018, it is estimated that about 10,590 children under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, it is also estimated that about 1,180 of the same age group will lose their fight against the disease this year. However, many major advancements in treatments have increased the quality and longevity of life. Through increased awareness and funding efforts, many more lives can be impacted for the better while medical researchers seek to find a cure. The City of Sunny Isles Beach desires to support and show solidarity with the families, medical personnel, friends, and other municipalities to support children and loved ones affected by pediatric cancer. As such, I ask my colleagues on the City Commission to approve this Resolution and join the fight against this devastating childhood disease by declaring September 2018 Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.
