RESOLUTION NO. 2018 - 2$S 1 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING OCTOBER 2018 NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH; PROVIDING FOR THE CITY MANAGER AND THE CITY ATTORNEY WITH THE AUTHORITY TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, domestic violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors — violence or threats of violence — that one person uses to establish power over a current or former spouse, intimate partner or family or household member in order to control that person's actions and activities; and WHEREAS, domestic violence may include threats, physical violence, sexual assault, stalking, kidnapping and many other types of unwanted behavior or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death; and WHEREAS, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men; and WHEREAS, domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, religion, or social, economic, ethnic or educational background. It happens to men, women, the elderly and children; and WHEREAS, only 34 percent of victims hurt by their intimate partners receive medical care for their wounds; and WHEREAS, one in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to show its support and solidarity to domestic violence victims and survivors, to recognize the advocates, law enforcement officers, victim service providers, and organizations who work tirelessly to protect and heal survivors and victims every day, and to call on the residents of the City to become advocates against domestic violence and support victims of domestic violence in finding help and healing, by declaring October 2018 National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Recitals.
