RESOLUTION NO. 2018 - 2$S 1 <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF <br /> SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING OCTOBER 2018 <br /> NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH; <br /> PROVIDING FOR THE CITY MANAGER AND THE CITY <br /> ATTORNEY WITH THE AUTHORITY TO DO ALL THINGS <br /> NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; <br /> PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> WHEREAS, domestic violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors — violence or threats <br /> of violence — that one person uses to establish power over a current or former spouse, intimate <br /> partner or family or household member in order to control that person's actions and activities; and <br /> WHEREAS, domestic violence may include threats, physical violence, sexual assault, <br /> stalking, kidnapping and many other types of unwanted behavior or any criminal offense resulting <br /> in physical injury or death; and <br /> WHEREAS, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 <br /> people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one <br /> year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men; and <br /> WHEREAS, domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, religion, or <br /> social, economic, ethnic or educational background. It happens to men, women, the elderly and <br /> children; and <br /> WHEREAS, only 34 percent of victims hurt by their intimate partners receive medical <br /> care for their wounds; and <br /> WHEREAS, one in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year; and <br /> WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to show its support and solidarity to domestic <br /> violence victims and survivors, to recognize the advocates, law enforcement officers, victim <br /> service providers, and organizations who work tirelessly to protect and heal survivors and victims <br /> every day, and to call on the residents of the City to become advocates against domestic violence <br /> and support victims of domestic violence in finding help and healing, by declaring October 2018 <br /> National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE <br /> CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: <br /> Section 1. Recitals. The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and <br /> confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. <br />
