Within one year, this equates to more
than 10 million women and men. Incidents of domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless
of gender or age. Statistics show that 1 in 3 women, and 1 and 4 men have been victims of some
form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Also, of those who have been
physically injured, it is estimated that only 34 % will receive medical care for their injuries. Each
year, 1 in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses.
Many victims of domestic violence endure physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health effects
such as neurological disorders, nutritional deficiency, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD).
The City of Sunny Isles Beach desires to support and show solidarity with the domestic violence
victims and survivors, to recognize the advocates, law enforcement officers, victim service
providers, and organizations who work tirelessly to protect and heal survivors and victims. As such,
I ask my colleagues on the City Commission to approve this Resolution to help victims and
survivors find help and healing by declaring October 2018 National Domestic Violence Awareness
Month.
Additionally, I am working with the Office of the State Attorney to provide a training workshop on
domestic violence for our residents, especially our Russian Speaking residents.
I
