WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is committed in participating and informing its residents of cultural events and activities taking place in and around our community; and WHEREAS, the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) of Florida International University (FIU) has invited the City to become a co-partner in the FIU Prestige Cultural Series at BBC 2013 - 2014 to engage our community in outstanding cultural experiences in the educational setting of the Biscayne Bay Campus; and WHEREAS, the Prestige Cultural Series at BBC 2013-2014 will include five events, four at the Biscayne Bay Campus, and one event "Musical Theater Scenes" will be held in the Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 School on Saturday, February 1, 2014; and WHEREAS, additionally, through student and faculty performances, FIU will bring four (4) programs directly to Sunny Isles Beach through the Four Seasons Cultural Series providing opportunities for students to gain more performance experience and City residents are offered quality shows at affordable prices; and WHEREAS, the partnership between the City and FIU is mutually beneficial to our residents and visitors, and it can be incorporated into the City's existing Cultural Events Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1_ Approval of Partnership. The City Commission hereby approves the partnership between the City and Florida International University (FIU). Section 2. Authority of City Manager. The City Commission directs the City Manager to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution, which includes but is not limited to donating Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) to Biscayne Bay Campus of FIU for the Prestige Cultural R2013-Contribution to FIU Prestige Cultural Series 1 Series at BBC 2013 – 2014, and a Performance Donation to the FIU School of Music in the amount of Fifteen Thousand Dollars (515,000.00). We continue to offer quality public education to over 8,000 students on the Biscayne Bay Campus, many live within a 10 mile radius of the campus. We also have many other amenities available to our community neighbors —an extensive research library, recreation by the bay, lifelong learning classes, beautiful bike paths, and engaging lectures and speakers. We, therefore, respectfully request $5000 as a donation to support this initiative on the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University. Together we will provide a much needed service to our communities — quality cultural activities and experiences at an affordable price. All net proceeds will benefit the students and programs on the Biscayne Bay Campus, through our BBC Excellence Fund, and our School of Music. Russo, City Manager FROM: Susan Simpson, Cultural and Community Services Director DATE: 6/20/2013 RE: Partnership in the Prestige Cultural Series 2013 - 2014 with Florida International University and Performance Donation to the Florida International University School of Music RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Commission approve the attached resolution to partner with Florida International University (FIU) as a sponsor to present the "Prestige Cultural Series at Biscayne Bay Campus 2013 - 2014" in the donation amount of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000) as well as a Performance Donation to the Florida International University (FIU) School of Music in the amount of Fifteen Thousand Dollars ($15,000). REASONS: In partnership with Florida International University (FIU), the Prestige Cultural Series program provides 5 culturally rich events for the community at an affordable price. These programs benefit the the students and programs on the Biscayne Bay Campus, through the BBC Excellence Fund and the FIU School of Music. Additionally, through student and faculty performances, FIU will bring 4 programs directly to Sunny Isles Beach through the Four Seasons Cultural Series. This program, produced by the City through the Cultural and Community Services Department, provides opportunities for students to gain more performance experience and City residents are offered quality shows at an affordable price. The Performance Donation amount of $15,000 will benefit the FIU School of Agenda Item No.IOD Date 6/20/2013 95 Music directly. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: As the City is the title sponsor of the FIU Prestige Cultural Series, Sunny Isles Beach residents will receive discounted prices to all of the events in the Prestige Cultural Series. The Performance Donation amount of $15,000 is funded by the monies collected from LPLA Partners in exchange for access through the City parking lot located along 175 Terrace during the construction of Mansions of Acqualina. FUNDING SOURCE: Funding for the sponsorship of the FIU Prestige Cultural Series is available in the General Fund in the Commission's Donation budget account number 10.511.5490. Upon approval of the budget amendment, funding for the FIU Performance Donation in the amount of $15,000 will be available in the Commission's Donation budget account number 10.511.5490.
