Historic Preservation Board Meeting

Wednesday, January 18, 2017, 6:00 p.m.
1. Call to Order by Chairperson:
Action: Chairperson Arie Steiger called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. The following Board
Members and City Officials were present:

2. Approval of Minutes of the May 18, 2016 Historic Preservation Board Meeting.
Shari Blank moved and Warren J. Stamm seconded a motion to approve the above-mentioned
summary minutes,as amended. The motion was approved by a voice vote of 5-0 in favor.
3. Report by Consultant Ellen Uguccioni concerning the Historic Preservation Board Annual
Report to Miami-Dade County.
Action: Consultant Uguccioni reported that every year Miami-Dade County requires every
municipality in the County who is not under their specific purview to report on what they did
over the preceding year. What does that mean not under their purview? When the County
adopted an Ordinance to create the Historic Preservation Board,the County said okay you can be
under us or you can have your own Board, and in most cities they began their own Historic
Preservation Board. They have to report to Kathleen Kauffman, who is the Miami-Dade
Preservation Officer, on what they did the preceding year so that she knows as Director of
Historic Preservation that you are not just in name only, and so these reports in addition to the
minutes tells her what kind of board this is.
Shari Blank moved and Warren J. Stamm seconded a motion to approve the above-mentioned
Historic Preservation Board Annual Report and transmit to Miami-Dade County. The
motion was approved by a voice vote of 5-0 in favor.
4. Report/Approval on the "Sign for the Newport Pier" by Photographer David Gartner.
Action: Photographer David Gartner presented the final Sign for the Newport Pier, a
rectangle 16 x 20 black and white picture,early 1950's on the Pier and it is on aluminum. It
will be placed on the building in front of the Pier,where it says Sunny Isles Beach Newport

Fishing Pier Built in 1936. There is a plaque there and it is going to be next to it on the left.
The walkway is on the left, and everyone will be able to see it.
Fabiola Stuyvesant moved and Shari Blank seconded a motion to approve the Sign. The
motion was approved by a voice vote of 5-0 in favor.
5. Report /Discussion on the "Sunny Isles Beach History Books" by Photographer David
Gartner.
Action: Photographer David Gartner said he is in the process of recompiling the 2015
History Book and will present a sample to the board at the next meeting.
6. Old Business.

7. New Business.
Warren J. Stamm mentioned that in line with the History Books,it might be a good idea to create
a type of documentary with interviews of people that have firsthand knowledge of the origins of
Sunny Isles Beach. A discussion about whom to interview and what to include ensued.
Chairperson Steiger called for a resolution to be drafted recommending to city staff to examine
the feasibility of expending funds for a video/audio documentary of the history of Sunny Isles,and
further recommending city staff to consult with Ellen Uguccioni to explore the possibilities of
applying for state grants.
Warren J. Stamm moved and Shari Blank seconded a motion to draft a resolution. The motion
was approved by a voice vote of 5-0 in favor.
8. Date and Time of Next Meeting.
Action: After discussion it was decided to schedule the next meeting on Wednesday,April 19,
2017 at 6:00 p.m.
9. Adjournment.
Action: Shari Blank moved and Warren J. Stamm seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting,
and Chairperson Steiger adjourned it at 6:43 p.m.
