HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2021-3175RESOLUTION NO. 2021- 315 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR HOUSE BILL 6027 AND SENATE BILL 594 WHICH WOULD REPEAL THE PREEMPTION OF LOCAL LAWS REGULATING THE USE OR SALE OF AUXILIARY CONTAINERS, WRAPPINGS AND DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BAGS, AS WELL AS POLYSTYRENE PRODUCTS; URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS TO SUPPORT AND APPROVE THE LEGISLATION; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO DISTRIBUTE COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, House Representative Michael Grieco has filed House Bill 6027, and Senator Linda Stewart has filed the companion Senate Bill 594, for consideration by the Florida Legislature which repeals the preemption of local laws regulating auxiliary containers, wrappings and disposable plastic bags, as well as the use or sale of polystyrene products; and WHEREAS, the City Commission believes that environmental issues of this nature should be determined locally, in accordance with the City's home rule authority; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of residents and visitors of the City, and of the State of Florida, to adopt House Bill 6027 or Senate Bill 594. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Support of House Bill 6027 and Senate Bill 594. The City Commission hereby expresses support for House Bill 6027 and Senate Bill 594, and urges the Florida Legislature to adopt, and Governor Ron DeSantis to support and approve, the bill. Section 2. Directions to the City Clerk. The City Clerk is hereby directed to distribute copies of this Resolution to Representative Michael Grieco, Senator Linda Stewart, Governor Ron DeSantis, the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, the President of the Florida Senate, the Florida League of Cities, and the Miami -Dade League of Cities. Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED on this 18th day of February 2021. George H.
