HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2021-3264RESOLUTION NO. 2021--—' A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AMENDING RESOLUTION NO. 98-34, TO INCLUDE JUNE 19TH AS A OBSERVED HOLIDAY IN THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on January 1St, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free"; and WHEREAS, the American Civil War ("War") ended on April 91h, 1865; and WHEREAS, news of the end of slavery did not reach the frontier areas of the United States, including Texas, until months after the War; and WHEREAS, on June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3 proclaiming freedom for the slaves in Texas; and WHEREAS, for more than 150 years, June 19th ("Juneteenth") has been the oldest and only African American holiday observed in the United States, recognizing the day all slaves were freed; and WHEREAS, on June 17th, 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal Holiday; and WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to amend Resolution No. 98-34, and recognize Juneteenth as a City observed holiday. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Recognition. The City Commission hereby recognizes June 191h of every year as a City observed holiday in the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Section 2. Amendment of Resolution No. 98-34. The City Commission hereby amends Resolution No. 98-34 to include June 19th of every year as a holiday granted to employees. Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 18th day of November 2021.
