We are very excited at the prospect of working with your community to help make great public space designs. Our firm, Landscape DE, is a South Florida based landscape architecture office specializing in park and public space designs. A. Proposers must provide a description of the firm, including the size, range of activities, strength, stability, experience, awards, recognitions, etc. Landscape DE has been operating for over a decade in South Florida. We currently have three full-time designers on in our firm and plan to hire an additional designer soon. Currently, our staff can take on additional work and we will have no problem handling the work from your city. Landscape DE has worked with various communities in South Florida on park and public space projects including Miami-Dade County, FDOT, City of Miami Beach, City of Miami, Village of Pinecrest, City of North Miami, City of Hialeah, and City of Port St Lucie. We have experience in a variety of project types including playgrounds, parking areas, picnic areas, a petting zoo, a learning garden, gateways, pathways, monuments, streetscapes, pocket parks, a nature center, and a water play area. Landscape DE also has played roles in several major South Florida public space initiatives including the Ludlam Trail, the Underline, and Brickell Bay Park. Landscape DE’s principals, Douglas Thompson and Ebru Ozer, have been working as landscape designers in Florida for over a decade and have managed the design and construction of several major public space projects. Landscape DE has recently won a Florida Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects Award for the firm’s design of Camp Matecumbe Park in western Miami Dade County. The park’s design features a new nature-based playground, new walkways, earthworks, a new parking lot, large new trees, and extensive native planting. The design immerses children in a natural space and promotes an appreciation for natural things. The planting design utilizes species found in pine rocklands and has several bird and pollinator attracting plants that invite other species into the play space. B. How does the firm’s experience in similar project scope and complexity directly benefit the City for this project? Landscape DE has extensive experience with complex, multi-disciplinary projects. Landscape DE most recently completed project, the new Upper Garden project at Pinecrest Garden, was a wide ranging multidisciplinary effort led by Landscape DE as prime consultant. Our team included architects, engineers, and other various design consultants. The Upper Garden features a large new playground with nature-themed play sculptures, a new petting zoo with a ground-breaking design for inclusive interaction, a new learning garden, new restroom facilities, and a new iconic multi-use classroom and event building called the Inspiration Center. At Landscape DE we thrive on new challenges and finding unique solutions. We provide quality projects that local agencies can hold up as standards. Our work for Miami-Dade County for nature playgrounds 11Response to RFQ # 22-06-01 - Landscape DE inspired the county to develop new park standards guidebook based on our designs that will be utilized by other designers employed by the county. C. Describe what unique and extraordinary skills or qualifications your firm brings to this Project, including industry “Best Practices”. How would the selection of your firm add value to the Project? Landscape DE stands out from other firms for many reasons. First, great design is central of our design approach. We invest time to think about how our designs are constructed and their impacts. We often get compliments from our clients and from constructors on the thoroughness and detailing of our design documents. We are always looking for ways to ensure that our designs are both functional and beautiful. Our finished designs are also highly regarded. Our recently completed Camp Matecumbe Park project recently won a Florida Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects. Along with our landscape designs, we also have talented illustrators and graphic designers on our staff. We can create great images for our clients that allow them to market their project or provide information to the public. Some of our images have been used to market such large public initiatives as the Ludlam Trail, The Underline, and the Miami Forever Bond. In addition to our great design and graphic skills, we have strong principles in developing designs with sustainability and environmental resiliency. We believe that bio-diverse designs provide a healthy environment for people and nature alike. As possible we utilize a palette of mostly native plants in our designs. We have a goal of utilizing 95% native species on our projects. We also create opportunities for habitat in our designs. For example, we use plants that provide shelter and forage for birds, and we use plants that attract pollinators or that are hosts for various butterfly and moth species. Additionally, we try to add bat houses or nest boxes for birds, such as woodpeckers, Purple Martins, and owls as is feasible. Our principal beliefs also include design inclusivity. We strive to make our designs accessible and interesting to people of various abilities, backgrounds, and ages. We want to create parks that are enjoyable and inviting to everyone in the community. Access exceeding ADA standards and creating varied programming are some of the key elements that we try to incorporate in to all of our designs. D. Describe your company’s resources and capabilities with respect to scheduling cost control, quality control and project coordination with sub consultants as well as the City. At Landscape DE we believe in strong coordination of project teams during design and construction. We set out schedules and goals at the project outset and hold periodic meetings to keep the team focused and on task. When it comes to construction, we also work with constructing contractors to ensure they understand project goals and our expectations. We are closely involved in the project throughout the construction period, with frequent site visits and continuous communications with the constructors. We also develop project reports throughout construction on a weekly basis to provide the constructors and the clients with clarity on expectations and process. Our team is composed of landscape architect, engineers, and consultants with expertise in public space design. Our approach to projects will be shaped by the requirements of each individual project site and its required scope of work, but we have an overall approach to projects and the design process. Connect with Native Ecosystems: Central to Landscape DE’s design approach is a belief in the goals of sustainability and environmental resiliency. Through our designs, we seek ways to promote natural ecologies using design elements that support wildlife habitat for insects, birds, and mammals. We believe that biodiverse designs provide a healthy environment for people and nature alike. As part of our designs, we would like to connect visitors with the native environment, drawing attention to the uniqueness of the South Florida region’s climate and ecosystem. We would have a goal of using mostly native materials and creating elements that offer refuge and forage to local birds, small mammals, and pollinators. Develop Programming with Broad Appeal: As possible, the public realm taken as a whole should appeal to a wide variety of people around the community. We will make efforts to create opportunities for various age groups, ethnic background, and socioeconomics. Public should be an equal opportunity space in the community. Ensure Inclusiveness and Interaction: Our designs should not only meet current ADA standards, but should seek to exceed them, and be accessible to visitors of varying physical and mental capabilities. We will focus on offering benchmark facilities for inclusiveness. This will include a mix of active and passive elements, clarity in circulation, and ease of movement for people of varying abilities. Create Connections: We would like to help the city to create connective corridors throughout the city that connect the city’s neighborhoods and parks. We would like to include connective features into our plans as possible to move this idea forward. This can include creating trails within the parks that can link up with future trails to other parks. The idea is to find ways to connect public space pieces both physically and programmatically. Design Process The following are approximate descriptions of the elements of our design process: Site Analysis: This phase focuses on familiarizing ourselves with the project site, its challenges, and opportunities. Our first step in all projects is to visit the site. We like to visit each site multiple times, if possible, on different days, at different times, and under varying conditions. Findings are utilized to develop a site inventory and analysis. which could include topography, 29Response to RFQ # 22-06-01 - Landscape DE existing vegetation, existing sun and shade, condition of existing structures, circulation, utility locations, preferred usages, and other general conditions. Stakeholder Input: Working with stakeholders and the client, we will clarify the project programming and clarify goals for each project. Public outreach efforts are also possible as desired by the city. At Landscape DE, we love working with the members of the community and we look forward to making this part of the design effort. Outreach efforts are led by our principal Ebru Ozer. Ebru has extensive experience in public outreach. She has organized outreach efforts for our Pioneer Park Project in Port St Lucie, our Pinecrest Gardens Upper Garden expansion project in Pinecrest, and for our Tropical Audubon Society campus redesign master plan in Coral Gables, Florida. Public outreach can include workshops, surveys, or meetings (in-person or virtual). Our efforts can include educating the public about the site(s) and learning what they would like to see. Along with the outreach to the public, Landscape DE can also conduct interviews with the City leadership or pertinent professionals and stakeholders to obtain their opinions. Conceptual Designs: Based on our site analysis and stakeholder input, we develop a conceptual plan. The plan will also give a sense of the general character and function of a site overall. The designs can be illustrated through the development of sketch plans, section/elevations, and perspective illustration as needed to communicate the design concepts. The design concepts will be presented to the client and stakeholders for feedback before moving forward with further design development. Landscape DE can also develop refined illustrations that can help the city sell ideas or provide information. Initial cost estimates would be included during this phase to assist the city in decision making. Cost Estimates: Good cost estimates are an important part of decision-making process for a client. We will utilize data from past projects and from consultation with trusted contractors to develop cost estimates that are thorough, accurate, and inclusive. For larger projects, we can hire professional estimators to provide help developing our estimates. We typically start the development of our estimates during conceptual design and update the estimate throughout the design process up until bid time. Design Development: Upon approval of the design concepts developed during the conceptual design phase, Landscape DE will commence with detailed design development. During this phase, the conceptual designs will be refined and further clarified. Design team will keep the client abreast of the progress of detailing and will also submit a formal progress set for review by the client. The client may submit comments and suggestions for improvement in writing following the submission. Landscape DE can also present ideas to the public or city leadership for additional input. The comments and suggestions can also be incorporated into any construction documents. Updated cost estimates would be included. Project Approach 30Response to RFQ # 22-06-01 - Landscape DE Construction Documents: Following completion of design development, the design team will commence with the creation of documents for the permit and construction of designs. Landscape DE can submit progress sets of drawings at desired intervals for review by the City. Cost estimates will be updated again to reflect changes and detail updates. We take pride in thoroughness of our documents and conduct rigorous reviews of the drawings to ensure a great quality product. Quality Control/Quality Assurance: All of our construction drawings are reviewed several times by our team members during development of designs. We believe in comprehensive design documents that explain design concepts clearly to constructors. We have worked to refine our standard details over time, and we can also hire an outside reviewer if required by city. Dry-Run Permitting: The design team will submit drawing sets for permits as required. We have had extensive experience submit drawings to various municipal zoning/building departments. The drawings will be revised to meet municipal requirements and obtain approval. Bidding and Contractor Selection: If desired, the design team can assist the client in finding qualified contractors to bid on the designs and in selecting the contractor to construct the designs. Landscape DE will also respond to any RFI's required during the bid period. Construction Administration: If desired, the design team can provide construction administration services. This includes review of contractor workmanship and materials. We feel this is one of the most important phases in the design process. We prefer a hands- on approach with frequent engagement with the contractor. Even the best construction documents can be misinterpreted without proper guidance. Therefore, we try to be involved in the construction of all our designs. and to establish a good working relationship with the constructors and clients to ensure that the design is built correctly. Post-Construction: The design team will perform project closeout and approvals. Thank you very much for the opportunity to present this proposal. We look forward to talking with you further about work with your city.
