A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH,
FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR HOUSE BILL 1 WHICH REVISES PROVISIONS
RELATING TO FAMILY EMPOWERMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, FLORIDA TAX
CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, & PART-TIME ENROLLMENT IN PUBLIC
SCHOOLS; URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS
TO SUPPORT AND APPROVE THE LEGISLATION; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
DISTRIBUTE COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, during the 2023 Legislative Session of the State of Florida, Representatives
Tuck and Plasencia sponsored House Bill 1, commonly referred to as the "School Choice Bill"; and
WHEREAS, for decades, Florida has been a leader in providing high quality education
options for its parents and students;
WHEREAS, the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship, the Family Empowerment Scholarship for
students attending private school, and the Family Empowerment Scholarship for students with
disabilities have provided parents and students with numerous educational options and
scholarship programs;
WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach ("City") affirms its stance in providing high quality
education for all students across the State of Florida; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that the passage of the aforementioned bill is in the
best interest of the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY
ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Support of House Bill 1. The City Commission hereby expresses support for House
Bill 1, and urges the Florida Legislature to adopt, and Governor Ron DeSantis to support and
approve, the bill.
Section 2. Directions to the City Clerk. The City Clerk is hereby directed to distribute copies
of this Resolution to Representatives Tuck and Plasencia, Governor Ron DeSantis, the Speaker of
the Florida House of Representatives, the President of the Florida Senate, the Florida League of
Cities, and the Miami -Dade League of Cities.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on this 16th day of bruary 2'023.
