HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2023-3567RESOLUTION NO. 2023- ?(c✓ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND CONDEMNING THE UNPROVOKED AND UNJUSTIFIED WAR LAUNCHED BY HAMAS TERRORISTS AGAINST THE STATE OF ISRAEL; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT CERTIFIED COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, early Saturday morning, October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists, the terrorist organization that controls Gaza, launched an unprovoked and unjustified war on the State of Israel by air, land, and sea, including thousands of missiles; and WHEREAS, the United States and European Union have designated Hamas a terrorist organization because of its armed resistance against the State of Israel, which has included suicide bombings and rocket attacks; and WHEREAS, the large-scale surprise attacks by Hamas and the atrocities and war crimes committed by these terrorists represent the most dangerous escalation in the Israeli— Palestinian conflict in decades and comes almost exactly 50 years after the Yom Kippur War against the State of Israel in 1973, when the State of Israel was similarly taken by surprise in a sudden attack by neighboring Egypt and Syria; and WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023, the Hamas terrorist organization sent terrorists through the security barrier into southern Israel, slaughtering innocent civilians and abducting many of them as hostages, including women, children, babies, and the elderly, according to Israeli Defense Forces; and WHEREAS, Hamas terrorists also launched thousands of missiles into southern and central Israel; and WHEREAS, according to Israeli Defense Forces, more than 1200 people were killed and over 2,500 injured in the State of Israel from Hamas' massive surprise assault, including innocent women, children, babies, and the elderly; and WHEREAS, at least twenty-two (22) American citizens in the State of Israel are among those killed by Hamas terrorists, confirmed by officials from the U.S. State Department and the National Security Council; and WHEREAS, there are still a number of unaccounted-for Americans that the State Department is working with is Israeli partners to help find; and WHEREAS, early Sunday, October 8, 2023, Israeli forces were still fighting to regain control of eight areas of the country's territory from Hamas terrorists; and @BCL@F40B86CF.doc Page 1 of 3 WHEREAS, the death tolls are expected to rise significantly as the State of Israel formally declared war on Hamas on October 8, 2023, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu predicted a "long and difficult war;" and WHEREAS, the acts of terrorism committed by Hamas against the State of Israel threatens global peace and security; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the State of Israel as it protects its citizens from the heinous crimes committed by Hamas terrorists; and WHEREAS, the City Commission recognizes the unique and special relationship and deep connection that the State of Florida in general, and South Florida in particular, has with the State of Israel; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the safety of Jews wherever they are and supports the protection of the State of Israel; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the State of Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas; and calls the World to do the same; and WHEREAS, the City Commission condemns Hamas' brutal war on the State of Israel. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Expressing Support for the State of Israel. The City Commission hereby supports Israel and condemns the unprovoked and unjustified war launched by Hamas terrorists against Israel. Section 2. Expressing Support of Current and Future State Legislation. The City Commission hereby supports any current and future state legislation which supports Israel and Holocaust survivors. Section 3. Directive to the City Clerk. The City Commission directs the City Clerk to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Jason Pizzo, State Representative Fabian Basabe, members of the Florida League of Cities, and the City lobbyist Ron L. Book. Section 4. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 5. Effective Date. REASONS: On the morning of October 7, 2023, the terrorist organization known as the Hamas carried oui unexpected and aggressive acts against the State of Israel. It launched an unprovoked war, involving extensive missile attacks, ground invasions, and the breach of security barriers leading to the tragic death of numerous innocent civilians, including at least twenty-two American citizens. The scale and nature of these attacks represent the most intense escalation in the Israeli -Palestinian conflict in 50 years, reminiscent of the surprise assault Israel faced in the Yom Kippur War in 1973. By way of this resolution, the City Commission expresses its unwavering support for Israel and it! defense efforts and calls for global solidarity against these violent acts by Hamas.
