HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2024-3699,o�c' �" RESOLUTION NO. 2023-.� � /� A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE STATE OF ISRAEL'S RIGHT TO EXIST AND TO DEFEND ITSELF AND ITS PEOPLE AGAINST ALL AGGRESSION FROM THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN AND ITS PROXIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, HAMAS, HEZBOLLAH, AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUTHI MOVEMENT (ANSARALLAH) WITHIN THE REPUBLIC OF YEMEN, AND SUPPORTING THE UNITED STATES' UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO ISRAEL'S SECURITY AND URGING THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE PROVIDING MILITARY SUPPORT AND ARMS TO THE STATE OF ISRAEL FOR PURPOSES OF ITS DEFENSE; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT CERTIFIED COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, early Saturday morning, October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists, the terrorist organization that controls Gaza, which is directly and indirectly supported and funded by the Islamic Republic of Iran, launched an unprovoked and unjustified war on the State of Israel by air, land, and sea, including thousands of missiles; and WHEREAS, the United States has designated Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah) as terrorist organizations because of their terrorist activities and their repeated attacks against 'the State of Israel, which has included suicide bombings and thousands of rocket attacks; and WHEREAS, the Islamic Republic of Iran conducts its terrorist operations throughout the Middle East region through its proxies, including but not limited to, Hamas, Hezbollah, and members of the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah) within the Republic of Yemen; WHEREAS, the large-scale surprise attacks by Hamas on October 7, and the atrocities, war crimes, and subsequent continued daily rocket attacks on the State of Israel, committed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, and its proxies, represent the most dangerous escalation in the Middle East in decades; and WHEREAS, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the' Houthi Movement (Ansarallah), with the support and funding of the Islamic Republic of Iran, have launched thousands of missiles into Israel; and WHEREAS, the acts of terrorism committed by Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah), with the support and funding of the Islamic Republic of Iran, against the State of Israel threatens global peace and security; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the State of Israel's right to exist and defend itself as it protects its citizens from the continued aggression, terrorism, and military action continuously perpetrated by Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah), with the support and funding of the Islamic Republic of Iran; and 241 @BCL@8COBEE63.doc's Right of Defense Page 1 of 3 WHEREAS, since the founding of the State of Israel, the United States. has provided Israel with over $158 Billion in military aid, making Israel the greatest recipient of military aid in U.S. history; WHEREAS, since the unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the United States has so far continued to provide the State of Israel with at least $12.5 billion in military aid in support of its defense; WHEREAS, on August 13, 2024, the White House announced that the United States has approved five potential Foreign Military Sales (FMS) cases worth approximately $20.3 billion for the State of Israel, including advanced medium range air-to-air missiles, F151A and F151 aircraft, high mobility artillery rocket systems, medium tactical vehicles, high explosive mortar cartridges, and tank cartridges; and WHEREAS, on August 13, 2024, the White` House reaffirmed the United States' "unwavering" commitment to Israel's security and stated the United States "will continue to do what is necessary to ensure Israel can defend itself in the face of these threats;" and WHEREAS, the City Commission recognizes the unique and special relationship and deep connection that the State of Florida in general, and South Florida in particular, has with the State of Israel; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the safety of Jews wherever they are and supports the protection of the State of Israel; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the State of Israel's right to exist and defend itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas, and the continued attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies; and calls the World to do the same; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the United States' unwavering commitment to Israel's security and urges the United States government to continue providing military support and arms to the State of Israel for purposes of its defense against the continued attacks and aggression by the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies, including but not limited to, Hamas, Hezbollah, and members of the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah) within the Republic of Yemen; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Expressing Support for the State of Israel's Right to Exist and Self -Defense. The City Commission hereby supports Israel's right to exist and defend itself and its people against all aggression from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies, including but not limited to, Hamas, Hezbollah, and members of the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah) within the Republic of Yemen. Section 2. Supporting and Urging Continued Military Aid and Support. The City Commission hereby supports the United States' unwavering commitment to Israel's security and urges the United States government to continue providing military support and arms to the State of Israel 242 @13CL@8C013EE63.does Right of Defense Page 2 of 3 for purposes of its defense against the continued attacks from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies, including but not limited to, Hamas, Hezbollah, and members of the Houthi Movement (Ansarallah) within the Republic of Yemen. Section 3. Directive to the City Clerk. The City Commission directs the City Clerk to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Jason Pizzo, State Representative Fabian Basabe, members of the Florida League of Cities, and the City lobbyist Ron L. Book. Section 4. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 5. Effective Date. REASONS: This Resolution expresses support for the State of Israel's right to defend itself against aggression from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi Movement. The resolution highlights the attacks launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and the ongoing missile assaults on Israel, deeming these actions significant escalations in the Middle East. The Resolution also urges the United States government to continue providing military support to Israel to ensure its defense. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: At the agenda review Workshop on August 13, 2024, Commissioner Joseph and Stuyvesant requested to be added as co-sponsors of this Resolution.
