HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2014-2322RESOLUTION NO. 2014- z3z2, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE SUNNY ISLES BEACH K -8 TRUST FUND FOR THE FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU) FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, IN AN AMOUNT OF FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS (55,000.00); AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION: PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City Commission has made a strong commitment to provide educational opportunities to the youth of the City of Sunny Isles Beach; and WHEREAS, the City's commitment to education is demonstrated by the partnership between the City and the School Board of Miami -Dade County to create the Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K -8 School; and WHEREAS, on December 15. 2011 via Resolution No. 2011 -1827, the City Commission created a College Scholarship Program for high school students from the City of Sunny Isles Beach; and WHEREAS, the City desires to continue its commitment to education and wishes to donate Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) to the Sunny Isles Beach K -8 Trust Fund for the FIU First Generation College Scholarship Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Contribution. The City Commission hereby approves a contribution of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) to the Sunny Isles Beach K -8 Trust Fund for the FIU First Generation College Scholarship Program. Section 2. Authorization of Citv Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 3. Effective Date. Russo, City Manager FROM: Susan Simpson, Cultural and Community Services Director DATE: 10/16/2014 RE: First Generation Scholarship Donation to Florida International University in the amount of Five Thousand Dollars. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Commission consider the attached resolution. REASONS: Students who attend Florida International University, that are the first generation of their family to attend college, may apply for scholarship funds to help pay for their education. This is a federal program and all donations made to this special fund are matched by the federal government. A donation by the City of Sunny Isles Beach, through the Sunny Isles Beach K -8 School Trust, of $5,000 will ultimately be $10,000 which will result in $1,000 scholarships to ten (10) students who are residents of Sunny Isles Beach. FUNDING SOURCE: Funds are budgeted for and available in the City Commissions Grants / Donations Budget in the General Fund.
