RESOLUTION NO. 2025 -� <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, <br />FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR FLORIDA SENATE BILL 50 AND HOUSE BILL <br />371, RELATING TO NATURE -BASED METHODS FOR IMPROVING COASTAL <br />RESILIENCE; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT COPIES OF THIS <br />RESOLUTION; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALLTHINGS NECESSARY <br />TO EFFECTUATE THE TERMS OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, Florida's coastline is a vital resource providing significant economic benefits <br />through flood control, fishing, recreation, and navigation, as well as supporting biodiversity and <br />habitat conservation for endangered species; and <br />WHEREAS, Florida is increasingly vulnerable to rising sea levels and extreme weather <br />events, which pose a risk to both public and private properties, infrastructure, and the overall <br />well-being of coastal communities; and <br />WHEREAS, Florida State Senators Ileana Garcia and Bryan Avila introduced Senate Bill 50 <br />("SB 50"), and Florida House Representatives Jim Mooney and Fabian Basabe introduced House <br />Bill 371 ("HB 371"), proposing comprehensive strategies to enhance Florida's coastal resilience <br />through nature -based methods, including the restoration of mangroves, living seawalls, oyster <br />reefs, salt marshes, and coral reefs; and <br />WHEREAS, these bills would require the Florida Flood Hub for Applied Research and <br />Innovation to develop design guidelines and standards for green and gray infrastructure, while <br />directing the Department of Environmental Protection to adopt rules promoting coastal <br />protection through nature -based solutions; and <br />WHEREAS, SB 50 and HB 371 encourage local governments to participate in initiatives <br />such as mangrove replanting, shoreline vegetation restoration, and flood mitigation strategies, <br />fostering partnerships that enhance coastal resilience and economic sustainability; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach (the "City") recognizes <br />the importance of proactive measures in protecting its coastal areas and supports legislation that <br />advances climate adaptation and environmental preservation; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Commission finds it in the best interest of its residents to express <br />support for SB 50 and HB 371. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY <br />ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. Express Support of Senate Bill 50 and House Bill 371.
