HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2025-3873RESOLUTION NO. 2025- S?7S A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE ISSUANCE OF A PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING THE 114TH NATIONAL DAY OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN); PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the Republic of China (Taiwan) will observe its 114th National Day on October 10, 2025, marking more than a century of democratic development and commitment to freedom and self -governance; and WHEREAS, Taiwan and the United States share a strong and enduring friendship rooted in the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, with Taiwan serving as a vital partner in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region; and WHEREAS, Taiwan is a key economic partner to both the United States and the State of Florida, ranking as the United States' 7th largest trading partner and Florida's 4th largest bilateral merchandise trade market in the Asia-Pacific region; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach (the "City") wishes to formally recognize Taiwan's generous humanitarian support following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and values its multiple sister -city relationships across the nation, and its cultural ties that strengthen mutual understanding and goodwill. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval Issuance of Proclamation. The City Commission hereby approves the issuance of a proclamation recognizing October 10th, 2025, as National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the City. Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 21St day of Ay u�t, 2025. And under the leadership of President Lai Ching-te, it has been demonstrated that Taiwan is a pivotal force for democratic stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific; and WHEREAS, the United States Department of State, while stating that China was using the UNGA Resolution 2758 as a tool to falsely portray Taiwan's status as illegitimate as a means to suppress Taiwan, also reaffirmed the unwavering United States commitment to Taiwan and the long-standing efforts to preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait; and WHEREAS, Taiwan is the United States' 7th largest trading partner, as well as Florida's 4th largest bilateral merchandise trade market in the Asia-Pacific region; and WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives approved the United States -Taiwan Expedited Double -Tax ReliefAct by an overwhelming majority on January 15, 2025, underscoring the high regard and strong support on both sides of aisle for addressing double taxation issues between the two countries; and WHEREAS, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton made landfall in September and October 2024, respectively, impacting vast areas and causing casualties and damage, and the Government of Taiwan donated $300, 000 through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami to the Florida Disaster Fund; and WHEREAS, Taiwan and the United States signed the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral economic and trade cooperation on January 8, 2025, embodying the determination of both sides to advance toward a stronger partnership on mutual trade, industry, and investment activities; and WHEREAS, Taiwan's meaningful participation in numerous international organizations, including the International Civil Aviation Organization, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the International Criminal Police Organization would benefit regional development, peace, and prosperity; and WHEREAS, since the establishment of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami in 1988, Taiwan has developed sister-state/sister-city relations with Florida, and we are proud to have the `City in Florida' be a sister -city with `City in Taiwan'. We support Taiwan's mission of economic liberalization, democratization and significant international participation. NOW, THEREFORE, DO I, Larisa Svechin, as Mayor, and on behalf of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, hereby proclaim October 10, 2025, as Republic of China (Taiwan) National Day in the City of Sunny Isles Beach. RECOMMENDATION: This resolution is presented for your consideration. REASONS: In recognition of the 114th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on October 10, 2025, the attached proclamation honors Taiwan's enduring friendship with the United States, its vital role in promoting democratic values and economic prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, and its generous humanitarian support to Florida following recent natural disasters. The City joins communities across the nation in celebrating Taiwan's contributions to global peace, trade, and international cooperation, and reaffirms our support for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations and continued partnership with Florida.
