A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH,
FLORIDA, APPROVING THE ISSUANCE OF A PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING
SEPTEMBER 15 THROUGH OCTOBER 15, 2025, AS NATIONAL HISPANIC
HERITAGE MONTH; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15
through October 15 to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose
ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America; and
WHEREAS, proudly recognizes the achievements, resilience, and vibrant traditions of its
Hispanic residents and reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusion, understanding, and
opportunity for all; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to formally recognize September 15 through
October 15, 2025, as National Hispanic Heritage Month in the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY
ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Approval Issuance of Proclamation. The City Commission hereby approves the
issuance of a proclamation recognizing September 15 through October 15, 2025, as National
Hispanic Heritage Month in the City.
Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all
things necessary to effectuate this Resolution.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption.

WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic andLatino history andculture,
providing an opportunity to celebrate the integralpart the Hispanic/Latino community has had in growing
and strengthening our democracy; and
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact the
Latino community has had across the country, and especially in the City of Sunny Isle Beach, and
WHEREAS, the Latino presence in America spans centuries, predating Spain's colonization ofwhat is nowpart
of the United States, and they have been an integral part ofshaping our nation since the Revolutionary War;
and
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Johnson and
was expanded to a month by President Reagan 20 years later in 1988; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 national theme, "Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future, "
celebrates the enduring legacy and future promise of Hispanic and Latino communities across the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month does not cover one single month but instead begins in the middle of
September and ends in the middle of October; and
WHEREAS, the timeframe of this month is significant because many Central American countries celebrate their
independence days within these dates, beginning on September 15 with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras, and Nicaragua; and
WHEREAS, by aligning with these independence dates, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the resilience and
determination of the Hispanic community; and
WHEREAS, the month-long celebration provides more time toproperly recognize the significant contributions
Hispanic/Latino Americans have made in the United States; and
WHEREAS, we will continue to advocate for Hispanics/Latinos as representation matters. Latinos and Latinas
continue to shape our nation, as business owners, activists, artists, public servants, and more. From serving
in the US military to being champions in the fight for civil rights, Latinas and Latinos remain strong leaders
and changemakers.
NOW, THEREFORE, DO I, Larisa Svechin, as Mayor, and on behalf of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, hereby
proclaim September 15 through October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month in the City of Sunny Isles
Beach.

RECOMMENDATION:
This resolution is presented for your consideration.
REASONS:
Hispanic Heritage Month honors the rich histories, cultures, and achievements of Americans whose
ancestry traces to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The observance
begins on September 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American
countries and continues through October 15. -
