HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2026-4081RESOLUTION NO. 2026 - A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO RAISE THE FLAG OF ISRAEL ON OCTOBER 7, 2026, IN A DISPLAY OF SUPPORT AND SOLIDARITY WITH THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND ITS PEOPLE; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE TERMS OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach (the "City") is home to a vibrant Jewish and Israeli community with deep cultural, familial, and historical ties to Israel, with our first sister city, Netanya; and WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a barbaric, unprovoked attack on Israel, brutally murdering, maiming, and torturing over 1,200 innocent civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, taking hostages of which 48 remain, and igniting an ongoing conflict marked by unimaginable horror; and WHEREAS, this savage assault has profoundly impacted our own community as many residents have personal connections to those killed, injured, or still suffering; and WHEREAS, the City Commission stands firmly with Israel, recognizing its undeniable right to defend itself, as affirmed by the State of Florida and the United States government, and chooses to honor the victims and show solidarity by raising the Israeli flag on October 7, 2026, declaring unequivocally that City stands on the right side of history. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Expressing Support for Israel. The City Commission hereby expresses its unwavering support for Israel and its people, and condemns the atrocities committed by Hamas, Section 2. Direction to Raise State of Israel's Flag. The City Commission hereby directs the City Manager to raise the State of Israel's flag on October 7, 2026, in a manner comporting with the State of Florida's flag protocols. Section 3. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 4. Effective Date. REASONS: On October 7, 2023, Israel experienced a devastating and unprecedented attack by Hamas, resulting in significant loss of life and the onset of an ongoing conflict. This event has had a profound impact on communities around the world, including many residents of Sunny Isles Beach who maintain strong cultural and familial ties to Israel. The proposed resolution reflects the City's desire to honor the victims of the October 7 attack, stand in solidarity with those affected, and reaffirm its commitment to peace, security, and the protection of innocent lives.
