Savino & Miller Design Studio has extensive experience in outdoor ® design and planning in the following areas: Site Master Planning Analysis and Design; Urban Design Plans ® and Concept Diagrams; Open Space Planning and Design; Community and Natural Resources Planning; Design Guidelines; Streetscape Planning, Analysis and Design; Feasibility Studies; Peer Review Analysis; ® Renderings/Modeling; Preparation of Construction Documents and Specifications; Park Design; Median ® Design; Native Planting; Cost Estimating for public facilities as well as many private commercial and residential projects. ® Our background and experience in landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and planning give us a unique insight into the various elements and forces which shape our built environment. Our method includes an analysis of factors such as climate, physical and sociocultural context, aesthetics and long term maintenance. ® We practice to create beautiful and meaningful places, which invite people to interact and enhance their sense ® of community, and which are beneficial to the local ecology. In so doing, these places can become a source of pride to our neighborhoods and communities. ® In regards to landscape architecture, we are especially interested in reflecting the rich, biodiversity of South ® Florida native plant life, as well as our unique cultural/agricultural traditions. At the same time, we believe in ® being responsive to, and instructive of, present and future issues of ecological sustainability, in terms of water use, resource consumption and use of local materials. C Having practiced in many public and private projects, we are also keenly adept at creative design in a range of budgets. ® Savino & Miller Design Studio is located in North Miami in close proximity to the City of Sunny Isles Beach where we have worked on several successful projects such as the site planning and landscape architecture master plan for the Sunny Isles Beach City Hall and more recently we conceptualized a plan for an entry park ® to a J. Milton parking garage project. ® Our experience varies in scale and scope, and private and public sector. Specifically and in regards to this request for qualifications, our experience and qualifications are represented as follows to the scope of services ® described in the RFQ: O o • Drawings & Specifications for Landscape Architectural Projects: Savino & Miller Design Studio has been preparing drawings (from schematic through construction ® documents) and specifications for a wide range of landscape architectural projects since 1993. 0 Documents are prepared in the latest version of AutoCad and complimentary documents are submitted ® in Excel, Sketch-up, Photoshop, In-Design, PDF, etc. as required. Documents can be placed in an ftp site, e-transmitted, saved in flash drives or cd's as requested by our clients. Our office has the capacity 0 to reproduce drawings in house in black and white and color up to a size of 11"x 17". Larger sizes O are sent out for printing at a more competitive cost. ® • Renderings/Modeling: O For better client visualization and understanding of the projects we create illustrative site plans, site ® renderings or models with different programs as appropriate to the project: Sketch-up, Rhino for 3D, Photoshop or actual physical models. 0 Savino(310121i7f1a41•10Studio=MO#12-04-02 14 0 0 ® • Cost Estimates & Feasibility Analysis: ® Opinions of cost are performed regularly by our firm. They are done in an itemized spreadsheet that corresponds to the plans. Some projects require a cost benefit analysis in terms of resource allocation. These studies help our clients in phasing the projects and implementing as money becomes available. ® • Meetings with City Staff, Presentations to Commission & Peer Reviews: We are used to presenting our design ideas to different clients and clients' review committees: such as ® historic boards, design review boards, staff meetings, etc. Additionally, we have also participated in O community meetings to achieve consensus in charrettes and meetings. These meetings have been ® particularly important when we work with residential communities such as The Venetian Islands, Orchard Park, etc, in Miami Beach and other projects requiring approval such as Pinecrest Gardens ® Lighting, South Pointe Park and Museum Park. • Natural Resource Planning, Analysis and Design and Local Plants: ® We believe in the comprehensive framework for resource planning. In creating a comprehensive, coordinated resource planning for improvements we believe that the City of Sunny Isles Beach will ® not only develop a common language for the City but it will promote sustainable practices if such resources are obtained or produced locally. This common framework will include: ® Tree Canopy: Maintenance of canopy while replacing trees as needed/required ® Plant Palette: Identify other plants/plantings that promote a unique identity to Sunny Isles Beach Sustainability: Materials selection, lighting and drainage solutions should take into account improving ® the sustainability of the City Maintenance: Design for long-term durability/low maintenance ® Art: Integrate opportunities for art in public spaces Site Furniture: Coordinate selection of site furniture to be functional but also contribute to the ® character and quality of the City Irrigation, paving design and lighting consultation could be included in any of the projects requested by this RFQ Generally, the planting selection's goal is to preserve and enhance tree canopy and create streets ® that allow trees to comfortably share space, beautifying the street while cooling the air. The obvious "best" method for growing trees in an urban environment is to give as much open space as possible ® to the planter itself. In busy sidewalks, this is not often possible — or practical — given the street's ® pedestrian needs. Lots of research has been recently done on developing techniques for optimizing ® tree growth below paved areas, such as structural soils, porous granular pavements, root/biological barriers, soil cells and root paths, without damaging the paving above as trees mature. • We are well versed in the design and implementation of"Xeriscape" landscapes. Various methods are available to effectively conserve water and other resources, such as grouping plants by water requirements, irrigation "zoning", the design of porous pipe underground irrigation, use of gravels ® and native drought-tolerant plants, and mulching. Just as importantly, is the need to minimize demands for maintenance. Generally, our design documents reflect the most current techniques for low maintenance, resource-efficient landscapes. o Our demonstrated project experience in the areas requested by this RFQ include: • Urban Design Plans / Concept Diagrams: ® The Coconut Grove Planning Study and the Miami Design District Charrettes (with DPZ, founders ® of New Urbanism, as Prime Consultant). The Homestead Bayfront Park Master Plan, which won o the APA Gold Section Award of Excellence in 2007. SavinotflI 7- Rx--R•wwStudio= 110#12-04-02 15 0 CD triD • Community Planning, Analysis & Design: ® Landscape master plans/construction documents for the streetscapes of several neighborhoods in ® Miami Beach: Orchard Park/Nautilus, four of the Venetian Isles and Biscayne Point. ® • Design Guidelines: ® Some examples of our design guidelines are included in the design of the Brickell Village Design Guidelines with the Corradino Group and also the set of guidelines as part of the Master Plan for the ® Homestead Bayfront Park. We have also worked on the Landscape Architectural Design Guidelines for Coconut Grove and the Design District in Miami. ® • Open Space Planning, Analysis & Design and Park Design: O Our most recent park experience includes South Pointe Park, Belle Isle Park in Miami Beach and Museum Park in downtown Miami as well as the lighting plan for the Old Parrot Jungle Park, which today is Pinecrest Gardens. Additionally, we just completed a master plan for the new open space park and garage in Sunny 0 Isles Beach. The Miami Beach Multimodal Facility, the Fisher Island Town Center Plaza and ® the Surfside Community Center offer open space design examples that our firm is proud of having successfully completed. ® Our firm has master planned the open space of many projects ranging from Institutional to Private ® Hotels and Condominiums. These include: Sunny Isles City Hall Complex, Aventura City Hall, ® Johnson & Wales University, Miami Beach Convention Hotel and Ritz Plaza Hotel among others. ® • Streetscapes and Medians, Planning, Analysis & Design: ® Our streetscape experience is likewise extensive: Arthur Godfrey Road, Washington Avenue and ® Espanola Way in Miami Beach; Brickell Avenue Median (from 5th St. to 15th St.), 127th Street at Johnson & Wales, and recently the design and installation of new sidewalk patterns and design ® guidelines for 125th Street in North Miami. ® Our experience allows us to take any project from conception to implementation. We pride ourselves in the ability to resolve our clients' pragmatic needs with creative design solutions. 0 ® We are a small design firm, which allows the principals to give direct attention to the project, start to finish. ® Savino & Miller Design Studio is bringing the most professional team that will assist as required: ® Felix Suarez at 3TCI (Surveyor): We have worked on numerous public sector projects together including ® our recent work for 125th Street and Pioneer Boulevard in North Miami. Lisa Hammer: Horticultural consultant and maintenance manual consultant, who has been part of our team in many landscape architectural projects and with over 20 years of experience in the South Florida environment. O Ken Didonato, PE: Irrigation consultant that assists Savino & Miller in most of our projects with over 20 years of experience. We are confident that our team's proven successful experience, expertise and creative approach will provide ® the City of Sunny Isles Beach with the highest standard of professional planning, design and consulting services for developing a comprehensive vision, and implementing great designs for Sunny Isles Beach. ® The following pages provide a description, scope and budget of related project experience: Savino&IR*.11.W Studio=L;{ao)#12-04-02 16 0 0 0 -,n I I 1 0 DESIGN STUDIO O LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE I URBAN DESIGN I ARCHITECTURE 71 SSII iI f 1 0 - 11 CI...a ed.& •- _ 1. „v. 1•:- Ifillt3011.70112 Ibillalasi tele '- "'.® . . .mini_ r•nr,, ,t A" ® . % a ' '' , °g 4.u■ w ® ,'/}... We ® understand the importance of teamwork and effective communication in delivering a successful project, as ® well as the need to coordinate with the project stakeholders, who will live with the results. ® Our background and experience in landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and planning give ® us a unique insight into the various elements and forces, which shape our urban environment. Our method includes an analysis of factors such as climate, physical and socio-cultural context, aesthetics and long term ® maintenance. In our view, our job is not a matter of adding paving, planting and lighting but instead is the art of 'making places'. In so doing, these places can become a source of pride to our neighborhoods and ® communities. We believe the issue of building consensus is especially important when dealing with city streetscapes and ® public spaces. We feel, in the urban environment, spaces should reflect people's wishes and desires and at the same time should reflect the nature of the area. Our job is to define and increase the identity of the ® place. The degree to which a city fulfills these innate desires measures its livability. We strive to create, in our public landscapes, a more livable city. ® Team Organization ® Our strategy is simple. Select the most highly-qualified consultants with extensive experience and proven performance to create, solve and enhance the Landscape Environment in the City of Sunny Isles and assist ® in the re-discovery of its innate qualities that will make it into a successful and unique center for residential, ® business and community activities. ® Our team members have been selected to fit within this process framework: a landscape architectural firm ® — SMDS, supported by an Horticulturist, an Irrigation Designer and a Surveyor will help us in providing the ® City the most professional Landscape Architectural Services. We believe that this team is capable of meeting ® and exceeding all the requirements of the RFQ. ® As the design process moves forward, it may be necessary to enlist the services of civil, MEP, or traffic ® engineers to assist the core consultant team described above. In that event, we believe that these services can be provided by the Engineers selected by the City in their rotational list. 0 Base Services Requested ® We understand that what the City of Sunny Isles needs a trusted Landscape Architectural team sensitive to the unique qualities of the City and with the ability to deliver successfully the following types of Services: ® Site Master Plans ® Site Master planning is one of the strengths of Savino & Miller Design Studio. Our Homestead Bayfront Park project which won the Award of Excellence in Landscape Architecture by the American Planning Association ® Gold Coast Section is one of the proofs of that. Because of our multidisciplinary approach and understanding of the different issues that affect site master ® planning we have been fortunate to participate as master planners in many projects. Some examples include: Sunny Isles City Hall where the Tony Roma's site was incorporated into the City Hall Complex plans; The 0 Miami Beach Multi-modal facility which integrates the site of the City Hall with a garage and an office build- ing into a beautiful plaza and streetscape design; The Costa D'Este Hotel in Vero Beach for Gloria & Emilio Estefan. S D.• . &cgmeQ td5tudio=1;3l0)#12-04-0z 60 S ® Urban Design Plans ® Streetscapes and Urban Design Plans are the most challenging and interesting types of work that we have accomplished. We have been lucky to have been selected to participate in the Miami Design District • Charrrette, the Coconut Planning Study, the Brickell Village Design Guidelines and the Master planning of ® Arthur Godfrey Road, Washington Avenue and Espanola Way in Miami Beach. These plans included ® signage, paving, planting, street furniture and lighting. Landscape Urban Design is the art of understanding how to create urban spaces. O • Some of the most important current issues to be addressed /tasks to be undertaken are: ® • Entry areas, Landmarks, Traffic Calming ® • Paving Recommendations: Vehicular, Pedestrian, Crosswalks ® • Street Furniture Recommendations • Street Clutter Inventory & Recommendations • •Additional Streetscape Elements ® • Loading and Service Access 0 • Tree Canopy: Maintenance of canopy while replacing trees as needed/required • Plant Palette: Identify other plants/plantings that promote a unique identity ® • Sustainability: Materials selection, lighting and drainage ® • Maintenance: Design for long-term durability / low maintenance ® •Art: Integrate opportunities for art • Unified vision for signage and graphics ® Park Design Parks represent the most democratic expression of the community. Parks are places where people of all ® backgrounds come together to enjoy nature, to play, to congregate. • ® The City of Sunny Isles has taken amazing steps to assure the people of Sunny Isles new parks for their enjoyment. The newly completed Heritage Park adds to the list of several other parks such as Samson ® Ocean Park, Golden Shores, Senator Gwen Margolis Park, Bella Vista Park, Pier Park among others. ® Additionally, the City has acquired underutilized commercial properties and is in the process of turning them ® into public parks. We are very impressed with this visionary approach taken by the City of Sunny Isles. Savino & Miller has been lucky in participating in the Sunny Isles Boulevard Garage/Park Project, master ® planning a new park and we will be honored in continuing to help the City in bringing this vision to fruition. ® Savino & Miller Design Studio has been involved in many park projects in South Florida. Our scope of work includes from Master Planning to Construction Documents and Construction Observation. Our work ® recognizes the unique location and the particular natural and built environment, the surrounding community • needs and desires and the pragmatic goals of our clients. Currently we are working with the City of Miami on the Museum Park Project in Downtown Miami. Additionally, we are master planning the Matheson ® Plantation Village in Crandon Park and the planting plan for some areas of Greynolds Park with Miami Dade ® County. With Miami Dade County we also completed and won the Award of Excellence in Planning in 2007 ® for the Homestead Bayfront Park, one of the Miami — Dade County Heritage Parks. We have worked in • neighborhood park projects such as Belle Isle in Miami Beach, plazas like the Town Center in Fisher Island and regional parks like South Pointe Park in Miami Beach (FNGA Award of Excellence 2010). ® Median Design Savino & Miller Design Studio has worked on many Median Design Projects. Our first job was the Brickell ® Avenue Median from 5th Street to 15th Road. Our design intent was to create a strong urban image for ® Brickell Avenue. Following that experience, we designed the Washington Avenue Median in Miami Beach. ® After observing how people moved and crossed the street and due to the pedestrian, slow traffic nature of ® Savino& 7Desi.nStudio cit,M)o #12-04-02 61 S 0 ® the street, we added some pervious pavers in a wave pattern around the trees with the objective of allowing ® crossing without stepping on the planting. For the Johnson and Wales University Median in NE 127 Street in North Miami we created a double colonnade of Royal Palms with a diverse native planting as an understory ® with small flowering trees. These three projects represent three different situations in terms of permitting and regulations within the ® three municipalities: Brickell Avenue as an FDOT Road, Washington Avenue as a County Road and 127 ® Street as a Local Road. Work Methodology Based on the Scope outlined in the RFQ, we envision our role as designers and planners as the main ® conductor of the design process for the Landscape Architectural projects. Based on our previous successful ® experience with our consultants, we will be creating specific design solutions for streets, urban design, site master planning and parks located within the City of Sunny Isles Beach. ® Generally, our tasks/process, which will be refined in consultation with the City, may include: ® 1.Analyze existing conditions and report findings 9 2. Discover constraints and opportunities for the project areas ® 3. Develop a coordinated palette of plantings, paving, lighting, street furniture and signage/graphics ® for projects as design guidelines ® 4. Develop alternative conceptual designs for those areas identified by the City leadership ® 5. Review alternatives and as/when appropriate, with the City, County, State and other agencies ® and stakeholders ® 6. Assist in identifying "preferred" solutions and developing them into recommended conceptual designs ® 7. Represent the City at coordination meeting with other agencies and participate in public meetings as necessary ® 8. Develop Construction Documents and Specifications to build specific projects ® 9.Address such other issues as directed by the City, which may include additional tasks not noted above In regards to planting, an important part of our projects is the application of innovative—and new techniques ® — to preserve and encourage the healthy growth of existing and proposed trees in urban environments so close to the ocean. ® We are well versed in the design and implementation of"Xeriscape" landscapes. Various methods are available ® to effectively conserve water and other resources, such as grouping plants by water requirements, irrigation "zoning", the design of porous pipe underground irrigation, use of gravels and native drought-tolerant plants ® and mulching. Just as importantly, is the need to minimize demands for maintenance. Generally, our design ® documents reflect the most current techniques for low maintenance, resource-efficient landscapes. In addition to the traditional scope of landscape architectural services, such as planting, irrigation and paving ® design, our team will provide site lighting consultation, maintenance specifications, recommendations for ® street furniture and signage/graphic design through a set of defined Urban/Street Design Guidelines for the City of Sunny Isles Beach. ® Savinof'3=7Desi.n Studio ohnll#12-04-02 62 ® the street, we added some pervious pavers in a wave pattern around the trees with the objective of allowing ® crossing without stepping on the planting. Savino Miller led the master planning effort, especially relating to the relationship between the existing architectural aesthetic, building-to-public right-of way relationships, and site issues. The first phase, built with ® ARRA funding was a million dollar sidewalk design which key elements included the paving pattern, which focused on historic design elements. The Master Plan included as well a sustainable streetscape planting, and streetscape re- configuration that included tree palms and planted bulb outs, and pervious paving parking spaces. Pioneer Boulevard is the main street of a residential neighborhood in North Miami. Savino & Miller designed the ® improvements and restoration to the historic fountain on NE 6"'Avenue, as well as the streetscape's paving and planting ® improvements from NE 6`h Avenue to West Dixie Highway. Flowering trees approved by the city have recently been ® installed. The project fountain improvements are going to bid and we anticipate completion this year. ® Savino Miller provided landscape architectural services which included master planning, design documents and construction administration. Working directly with several city departments as well as the installation contractors, Savino ® & Miller insured that all aspects of the design were completed with great attention to detail. ® In summary, Savino Miller Design Studio performed in an exemplary manner of workmanship and professionalism, ® helping us to create an integrated downtown design aesthetic, and new streetscape for two of our important city corridors. ® I am pleased to recommend Savino Miller based on my experience in working with them. • S' cerely, ® Ale- any, P. SMDS has worked with diligence and the highest standard of professionalism over the past five years in producing a Master Plan, design/ ® construction documents, and construction phase services for our recently opened Surfside Community Center, on Collins Avenue and 90th Street. ® SMDS used a creative and comprehensive planning approach in providing the City with alternative active/passive park designs for our community center's complete renovation. They worked diligently with ® the City Commission, our staff and through numerous community meetings throughout the process to ® build consensus, and used these inputs to develop a progressive, beautiful and creative design. The project was designed for silver LEED certification. ® The final design ingeniously incorporated the beach dune area — which was formerly separated from the pool deck - directly to the new pool deck area, along with integrating a multi-functional pool area in a ® relatively tight space, serving the needs of children, recreational swimmers and swimming classes. ® The project has been a huge success for residents and visitors alike, and we are extremely satisfied with ® the results.
