Dear Mayor Scholl, Ms. Simpson,
On behalf of our first generation students and Vice Provost Steven Moll, I would like to
thank you and the City of Sunny Isles Beach for your continued support of the First -
Generation Scholarship Fund at FIU. Your gifts to the Fund have helped ensure that our
first generation students living in the City of Sunny Isles Beach reap the benefits of an
FIU degree.
Designed to bring the American dream within reach of Florida residents who are the first
generation in their families to attend college, the First Generation Matching Grant
Program provides financial aid to undergraduate students at Florida's state universities.
Approved by the Florida legislature in 2006, this innovative program matches private
donations 100 percent. Since its inception in 2006, the First Generation Scholarship Fund
has awarded nearly $3 million to FIU's first generation students. Given the fact that
approximately 86% of FIU's FTIC (first time in college) students depend on financial aid
to pursue higher education, such scholarship funds are critical.
Once again, we respectfully request the City of Sunny Isles Beach to support the First
Generation Scholarship Fund at FIU. Your donation will be distributed among the
students from the City of Sunny Isles Beach, according to their need level determined by
our Financial Aid Office at FIU. Your kind gift and meaningful support will ensure that
FIU's tradition of academic excellence carries on.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 305-
919-4008.
Sincerely,
Annick De Bruyne

Charitable Contribution to the Sunny Isles Beach K-8
RE: Trust Fund for the Florida International University First
Generation Scholarship Program
RECOMMENDATION:
This resolution is presented for your consideration.
REASONS:
The Sunny Isles Beach K-8 Trust Fund is sponsoring a donation to the
Florida International University First Generation Scholarship Program.
Florida International University (FIU) is the university of choice for many
of our residents. The First Generation Scholarship Program is a State
of Florida program that provides scholarships for students who are the
first in the family to attend college and have a financial need.
FIU is requesting a donation of $5,000 that will benefit 10 students at
$1,000 per student in which the State provides 100% matching
scholarship funds for a total of $10,000.00 when received through
private donations. Many of our residents rely on scholarships to
complete their college education.
