(305)947-0606 City Hall t-qr Of svN 'o (305)949-3113 Fax MEMORANDUM TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Commission Christopher J. Russo, City Manager FROM: Susan Simpson, Cultural and Community Services Director DATE: 2/18/2016 Memorials to Honor Former Commissioners Lila RE' Kauffman and Connie Morrow RECOMMENDATION: This resolution is presented for your consideration. REASONS: The first elected Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach in 1997, the year of incorporation, included two pioneering women, Lila Kauffman and Connie Morrow. Both women were vocal activists for progress in what was then a forgotten area of Miami-Dade County. They saw the beauty and potential of what Sunny Isles Beach could be and they paved the way for the Sunny Isles Beach of today. Lila Kauffman served on the Commission from 1997 to 2003. Lila had a passion for the arts, culture and education. She devoted much of her time to theaters and seniors and most notably was instrumental in starting what still exists today as the Cultural Events program. These trips would often take patrons to Broadway shows and dinner theaters. Some of her favorite trips were to Fairchild Tropical Garden and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Lila continued to promote educational and cultural programs after leaving office and had a keen eye out for the park across from her home, Senator Gwen Margolis Park. In her honor, it is recommended to name a botanical garden at the south end of Senator Gwen Margolis Park as the Commissioner Lila 288 Kauffman Botanical Garden. The trees and plants in that area will be named and we will erect a plaque in her honor naming it as such. Connie Morrow served on the Commission from 1997 to 2001. Connie was a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. In addition to her own radio show, she established the Fashion, Film, Entertainment and Production Council in the City. This committee, under Connie's direction, exposed the new and improved City of Sunny Isles Beach to the film production industry by hosting tours of the City. These 'behind the scenes' tours showcased areas of the City that location scouts rarely noticed and ignited an interest in bringing film productions to Sunny Isles Beach. Connie was also instrumental in hosting the first Sunny Isles Beach Talent Show, a ballroom dance competition, and a fashion show complete with runway and models! But Connie's greatest passion was her work with children. She established the Sunflower Society, a non-profit organization that provided access to the arts and camps to children who could not otherwise participate. Numerous children were sponsored by the Sunflower Society for summer camp to provide day care for working parents. Even after her term as Commissioner ended, Connie could be counted on to be at the summer camp talent show to cheer on the children's performance and encourage those children she sponsored. It is recommended that North Bay Road between 174 Street where Connie lived and 178 Street be named City Commissioner Connie Morrow Lane. This is the area that most of the families resided that Connie's programs aided. Both of these remarkable women have since left us but their legacy in our City lives on. It is recommended that we honor them for their service to our community in this way.
