A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY
ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING AND ADOPTING MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY'S CERTIFICATION OF THE RESULTS OF THE SUNNY ISLES
BEACH SPECIAL ELECTION THAT WAS HELD ON THURSDAY,
OCTOBER 1, 1998, FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUBMITTING TO THE
ELECTORATE OF THE CITY A PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE
MUNICIPAL CHARTER CHANGING THE NAME OF THE CITY TO
"AVENTURA BEACH," AND DECLARING THAT THE RESULTS THEREOF
REFLECT THAT THE QUESTION WAS NOT APPROVED
WHEREAS, Section 8.10 of the Municipal Charter of the City of Sunny Isles Beach,
required that an election be scheduled to decide whether the name of the City shall be
changed to "Aventura Beach"; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach adopted
Ordinance No. 98-43, thereby calling a Special Election for October 1, 1998, on the issue
of whether to change the name of the City, and;
WHEREAS, City Ordinance No. 98-43 authorized Miami -Dade County Supervisor
of Elections and his staff of officials to conduct said Special Election, with Miami -Dade
County's certification of the results of said Special Election being accepted by the City
Commission, and;
WHEREAS, the Certification of the official returns for each precinct vote in the
October 1, 1998, Sunny Isles Beach Special Election have been furnished to the City Clerk
by the Miami -Dade County Supervisor of Elections, and;
WHEREAS, the Certification of the Sunny Isles Beach Special Election is attached
and incorporated herein as Composite Exhibit "A" and;
WHEREAS, the Certification reflects that the ballot question as set forth below was
not approved by the electorate of the City of Sunny Isles Beach.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Certification of Results Of The Special Election
The City Commission hereby accepts and adopts Miami -Dade County's Certification
of the official returns for each precinct vote in the October 1, 1998, Sunny Isles Beach
Special Election, with said Certification being attached hereto as Composite Exhibit "A,"
and with the vote upon the question reflecting the following results:
SUNNY ISLES BEACH
CHARTER AMENDMENT CHANGING THE NAME OF THE CITY TO
"AVENTURA BEACH," EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 9, 1998.
Shall the above described amendment be adopted?
YES 195 -- 18.16%
NO 879 -- 81.84%
Section 2. Declaration of Results of the Special Election
The ballot question referenced herein was not approved.
Section 3. Effective Date
This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.

We, the undersigned, County Court Judge LINDA SINGER STEIN, Chairperson,
County Court Judge SHELLEY J. KRAVITZ, Substitute Member for Board of County
Commissioners, and Supervisor of Elections DAVID C. LEAHY, Member, constituting the
Board of County Canvassers in and for said County and appointed pursuant to Division of
Elections Opinion DE95-05 and Section 102.141, Florida Statutes, do hereby certify that we met
on the 15t day of October, A.D., 1998, and proceeded to publicly canvass the votes cast in the
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH SPECIAL ELECTION held on the lst day of October,
A.D., 1998, as shown by the returns on file in the office of the Supervisor of Elections. We do
hereby certify from said returns as follows:

OF THE RESULTS OF THE SUNNY ISLES BEACH SPECIAL ELECTION
THAT WAS HELD ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1998, REGARDING
CHANGING THE NAME OF THE CITY TO "AVENTURA BEACH," AND
DECLARING THAT THE RESULTS THEREOF REFLECT THAT THE
QUESTION WAS NOT APPROVED
RECOMMENDATION:
We request and recommend that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution accepting
Miami -Dade County's Certification of the results of the October 1, 1998, Special Election.
REASONS:
Pursuant to the requirement in our Municipal Charter, the City Commission of the City of Sunny
Isles Beach adopted Ordinance No. 98-43, calling a Special Election for October 1, 1998, on the
issue of whether to change the name of the City to "Aventura Beach." Ordinance No. 98-43
authorized Miami -Dade County Supervisor of Elections to conduct the Special Election, and also
calls for Miami -Dade County's certification of the results of the Special Election to be accepted
by the City Commission.
The election was held on October 1, 1998, and the County's Certification of the official returns
for each precinct vote in Sunny Isles Beach are attached to the proposed resolution as Composite
Exhibit "A." The Certification reflects that the ballot question was not approved by the
electorate of the City of Sunny Isles Beach.
