HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2003-542 RESOLUTION NO. 2003 - 5 ~ Z A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, PURSUANT TO RESOLUTION NO. 2003-535 CALLING A SPECIAL ELECTION ON PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE CITY CHARTER TO BE HELD ON JUNE 10, 2003, PROVIDING FOR CITY COMMISSION DESIGNATION OF TWO REGISTERED VOTERS WHO SHALL SERVE WITH THE CITY CLERK AS THE CANVASSING BOARD FOR THE SPECIAL ELECTION ON JUNE 10, 2003; PROVIDING FOR CONDUCTING THE ELECTION, POLLING PLACES, FORM OF BALLOT, VOTER REGISTRATION, NOTICE OF ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on April 24, 2003, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2003-535, amending Resolution No, 2003-524, calling for a Special Election to be held on June 10, 2003, on proposed amendments to the City Charter;'-and WHEREAS, City Ordinances Number 99-65 and 2001-124, provide for the City Commission to designate one registered voter who shall serve with the City Clerk and the City Manager as the Canvassing Board; and WHEREAS, the City Commission approved on second reading on May 15, 2003, an Ordinance removing the City Manager from the Canvassing Board, and designating an additional registered voter to serve on the Board, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Designation of Two Registered Voters to Serve on the Canvassing Board The City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach hereby designates E.h,\~k}U~L p,tV~ and :t:"R\JII\](; bl~olU~ , as the registered voters to serve with the City Clerk as the City of Sunny Isles Beach's Canvassing Board for the Special Election on June 10,2003, Section 2. Conducting the Elections The City Clerk is authorized to utilize the services of the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections and his staff of officials for assistance in the conduct of said Special Election, The Miami-Dade County Election Officials shall furnish the official returns for each precinct to the City Clerk of the City of Sunny Isles Beach as soon as the ballots from all precincts have been tabulated, and the City of Sunny Isles Beach Canvassing Board's certification of the duly accepted results of said election shall be accepted by the City Commission. Polling Places That said polling places in the City of Sunny Isles Beach for said Special Election shall be as established by the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections and his staff of officials, All electors shall vote at the polling places and the voting precincts in which the OFFICIAL REGISTRATION BOOKS show that the said electors reside. A list of the voting precincts and the polling places therein (subject to change by the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Election, in accordance with the laws of Florida) is attached hereto as Exhibit "A". Section 4. Form of Ballot The ballot for said Special Election shall be printed in compliance with State law as prepared by the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections, and as approved by the City Clerk as the Supervisor of Election for the City. Section 5. Voter Registration Registration of persons desiring to vote in said Special Election shall be in accordance with the general laws of the State of Florida governing voter registration. Qualified persons may obtain registration forms to vote at the Office of the City Clerk, City Hall, Suite 250, 17070 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, 33160, Monday through Friday, except legal holidays, between the hours of 9:00 a,m. and 5:00 p.m" and at such other voter registration centers and during such times as may be provided by the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections. Each person desiring to become a registered voter shall be responsible for properly filling out the registration form and returning it to the Miami-Dade County Elections Office, All questions concerning voter registration should be directed to the Miami-Dade County Elections Office, 111 NW 1st Street, Floor 19, Miami, Florida, 33130; mailing address: P.O. Box 012241, Miami, Florida 33101; telephone: (305) 375-5553. Section 6. Notice of Elections That not less than thirty days notice of said Special Election shall be given by publication in a newspaper of general circulation in Sunny Isles Beach, Miami-Dade County, Florida, The first publication shall occur in the fifth week prior to the Election, and the second publication shall occur in the third week prior to Election. At that time, the Canvassing Board will also authorize the time for opening valid absentee ballots on the day of the election. The canvassing of presumed invalid absentee ballots and provisional ballots will be conducted by the Canvassing Board beginning at 5:00 p.m. on June 10,2003, in the City Commission Chambers, 17070 Collins Avenue, Suite 220, Sunny Isles Beach. All proceedings will be open to the public. For a sign language interpreter or other accommodations, please call 305-947-0606 at least five days in advance. Jane A.
