HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2005-765 RESOLUTION NO. 2005- 1(.5 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, PROVIDING FOR THE CITY TO PARTNER WITH THE NORTH MIAMI BEACH OPTIMIST LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL PROGRAM BY DONATING TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS ($2,000.00) TO THEIR OPERATING FUND; PROVIDING FOR THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is committed to providing recreational activities to the young children in this community; and WHEREAS, the City has formed a partnership over the years with North Miami Beach Optimist Little League Baseball Program to provide baseball to the children in this community; WHEREAS, the partnership between the City and the Optimist League is mutually beneficial. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Partnership. The City Commission hereby approves the partnership between the City and North Miami Beach Optimist Little league. Section 2. Authority of City Manager. The City Commission directs the City Manager to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution, which include but not limited to donating $2,000.00 (Two Thousand Dollars) to the Optimist League. As you know, our organization serves hundreds of children in northeastern Miami-Dade County-including many in Sunny Isles Beach; 21 children have registered for the 2005 season-- by providing the opportunity to learn and play Little League baseball. The following information is being provided to substantiate our need. · Organization Name: North Miami Beach Optimist Little League, Inc. a A not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation a By international charter, a Little League such as the NMBOLL must be run entirely by volunteers, and must accept all applicants, regardless of ability to pay. o To further encourage participation by all regardless of economic status, we keep our player registration fees low. We provide scholarships for children of families with economic hardship. · Contact Information: President James J. Allen Telephone: 305.776.3889 Email: playball@nmboll.org · Amount of Funding Requested: Two thousand dollars ($2,000.00) ,\-.' i.t ., (I) NORTH MIAMI BEACH OPTIMIST LITTLE LEAGUE, INC. · General Needs to be Served by Funding: The NMBOLL provides an opportunity for hundreds of childrenl from all backgrounds to come together to learn and play baseball. This serves the positive goal of teaching kids lifetime values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and dedication, It also serves the goal of reducing the idle time of kids and keeps them off the streets. · Specific Scope of Activity: o Number of children served: 464 in 2004 (up from 360 in 2003, and 190 in 2001). o Eligible Ages: 5-16 o Length of Season: From January through June o Number of Games: Varies with age. Five-year-olds play approximately 12 games during the year~ ages 12 and up play over 20 games during the year. League All- Stars are also eligible to participate in the Little League International Tournament (also funded by the League), which takes place in July and can involve another 6 games. · Specific Funding Needs: o Uniforms o Balls o Equipment (helmets, catcher's gear) o Little League Charter Fees o Insurance · General Purpose of Organization: The NMBOLL provides the opportunity for youth to participate in Little League baseball. Volunteer managers and coaches teach kids basic baseball skills, as well as life lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, and dedication. · History of Funding. Last year, the City provided $1500.00 in funding to the League. The League is requesting an increase in funding to $2000.00 to address the rapid growth of the league and general cost increases. We also wish to begin to accumulate funds for several capital expenditures for the league, such as pitching machines and batting cages. Thank you for your kind attention and continued support. REASONS: At this Sue, the City is not in the position to provide a youth baseball league to the children of this community. The North Miami Beach Optimist Little League program is offered to all residents in the Northeast Miami-Dade area including Sunny Isles Beach as well as Golden Beach,Aventura,and North Miami Beach. The North Miami Beach Optimist Little League is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation that relies on donations, sponsorships, and fundraising events to help cover the expenses of league fees, uniforms, equipment, coaches,and referees. It is a quality program that follows the guidelines set by Little League Baseball's national organization. With our partnership, we assist in providing the opportunity for a baseball program to the youth of Sunny Isles Beach. Donations such as these allow the league to keep registration fees low to encourage participation by all regardless of economic status.
