Re: RENEWAL OF FUNDING FOR THE FLORIDA INIERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
BISCAYNE BAY SOCIETY PROGRAM
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution to commit to assist in
funding the Florida International University Biscayne Bay Society program by donating$5,000.00
(Five Thousand Dollars) from the general fund.
REASONS
The Biscayne Bay Society program provides many outreach cultural and educational events to
thousands of local residents in the northeast Miami-Dade area each year. Last year the city
sponsored the program at the same level of funding as being requested this year. The city
additionally supports these programs by providing free transportation to the 2"d Tuesday's events.
More than 200 adult educational/cultural/entertainment events are planned for this coming year.

RE: Request for Renewal of Funding for FIU Biscayne Bay Project
The FIU Biscayne Bay Society would like to invite the City of Sunny Isles Beach to
renew its funding of$5,000 for the FIU Biscayne Bay Society Project.
We are extremely grateful for the City's support during this past year. Because of your
strong support, several other municipalities have joined in funding our efforts to inform
the residents of the surrounding communities of all of the many outreach cultural and
educational events that are produced by various departments at this Campus. As a result,
we have been able to inform more than 150,000 residents each month, through direct
mail, Miami Herald newspaper advertising, and direct mail to more than 250
condominiums. As a result, more than 2500 residents have attended these events, with
high praise being offered by most of the attendees. Residents of the City of Sunny Isles
Beach have made up a substantial number of those attending.
Under separate cover, we have sent you materials describing the events of the past year,
and our methods of publicizing them to local residents.
This coming year (2005/2006), the University will continue to offer more than 200 adult
educational/cultural/entertainment events open to the public. In addition, the Society will
continue to sponsor the very popular"2"d Tuesday at Biscayne Bay campus"events.
For your files, the following pages contain a description of our activities, and a narrative
proposal.
Again, we thank you for your continued support and encouragement. If any additional
information is needed, please call,

FIU BISCAYNE BAY SOCIETY OVERVIEW
As indicated, the mission of the Society is to support the many outreach activities
sponsored by the various departments within the University and presented at the Biscayne
Bay Campus.
Many of these events are free, or carry a nominal charge. (In 2004/2005, the University
hosted more than 200 adult education/cultural/entertainment events open to the public).
As a publicly funded university, part of FIU's mission is to extend its activities to the
residents of the local communities. The local municipalities thus have an opportunity to
offer their residents a wide range of programming at the University level. These
programs could not be duplicated without the vast resources of the University.
The project's primary function is to assemble information about these programs and then
to set up effective communication between the University Campus and the surrounding
residents via:

"2n"Tuesdays at Biscayne Bay Campus!!"
As a way to dramatize this project, the FIU Biscayne Bay Society has created this
monthly high profile event at the campus. These events consist of an exciting
cultural/entertainment presentation once a month on the 2°° Tuesday of each month, from
approximately 6-8 PM. The first event will be on October 13, 2005, and will follow each
month through April 2006.
The evening's entertainment (or educational) event will be supplied from within the
resources of the University's Arts and Cultural departments, including:
School of Music Art Department, College of Arts& Sciences
Creative Writers program School of Hospitality Management
College of Education Department of Dance&Theatre
Honors College FIU Library System
FIU Art Museum Department of Religious Studies
Each of these evenings will also contain a"food tasting" component, and an opportunity
for local municipalities to display information about their activities.
