HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2006-968 RESOLUTION NO. 2006-~ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE "SECOND TUESDAY AT BISCAYNE BAY CAMPUS" PROGRAM, AND AUTHORIZING A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE BISCAYNE BAY SOCIETY OF FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FlU), IN THE AMOUNT OF FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($5,000.00); AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE TERMS OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is committed in participating and informing its residents of cultural events and activities taking place in and around the community; and WHEREAS, on July 17,2003, the City entered into a partnership with the Biscayne Bay Society of Florida International University ("FlU") via Resolution No. 2003-577 to co-partner in the FlU Biscayne Bay Project to keep its citizens apprised of any programs that may interest them, including the "Second Tuesday at Biscayne Bay Campus"; and WHEREAS, lots of Sunny Isles Beach residents have participated in the various programs and activities offered by the FlU Biscayne Bay Project; and WHEREAS, many of these residents have expressed their desire that the City continue to offer this cultural services program; and WHEREAS, the program was so well-received, the City renewed it partnership with FlU Biscayne Bay Project in September 2004 and 2005 via the adoption of Resolution Nos. 2004-173 and 2005-834, respectively; and WHEREAS, the City wishes to again continue said partnership as it is mutually beneficial to our residents and visitors, and it has been incorporated into the City's existing Cultural Events Program, and to donate $5,000.00 to Biscayne Bay Society of FlU for the FlU Biscayne Bay Campus project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Participation. The City Commission hereby authorizes continued participation in the "Second Tuesdays at Biscayne Bay Campus" program, which includes, but is not limited to, a charitable contribution in the amount of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) to the Biscayne Bay Society of Florida International University (FlU). The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate the terms ofthis resolution. Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption. John Szerlag, City Manager c\ Susan Simpson, Cultural & Human Services Dir~ "' September 21, 2006 Donation to the FlU Biscayne Bay Society Project for 2006-2007 BACKGROUND The City Commission has expressed a desire to support educational and cultural programs that benefit the residents of Sunny Isles Beach. For the academic year 2006-2007, Florida International University plans to offer more than 200 adult educational/cultural/enteltainment events open to the public. FlU Biscayne Bay Society publicizes and supports these programs through sponsorships as well as sponsoring the "2nd Tuesday at Biscayne Bay Campus" events. DIRECTION Given the above, please consider adopting the attached resolution to approve a donation in the amount of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) to co-sponsor the efforts of the Biscayne Bay Society utilizing funds available in account number I 0.511.5490 (Donations). Additionally, as a co-sponsor, the City will continue to provide free transportation to the "2nd Tuesday" events through the Cultural & Human Services Department.
