RESOLUTION NO. 2008- 125'1
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, TERMINATING THE
EDUCATION/SCHOOLS COMMITTEE OF THE MAYOR'S
ADVISORY COUNCIL (M.A.C.); AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO
EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Section 74-8 of the Code provides that there shall be as many standing
committees of the City Commission as the Mayor or City Commission deems necessary and that
the City Commission may establish or terminate such Committees from time to time; and
WHEREAS, in February 2004 the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2004-644
which established five advisory committees, which included the Education-Schools Committee;
and
WHEREAS, the Education-Schools Committee was charged with the task of assisting
the City Commission in making a determination whether to pursue a charter, public or alternate
school in the city; and
WHEREAS, the Education-Schools Committee researched the matter and recommended
the City pursue a public school with Miami-Dade County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, subsequently, the City formed a partnership with Miami-Dade County
Public Schools to facilitate the construction of a K-8 public school in the city; and
WHEREAS, the newly constructed Sunny Isles Beach Community School IS near
completion and is scheduled to open in August 2008; and
WHEREAS, in December 2007 the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2007-
1193, which continued the Education/Schools Committee with a caveat that it shall sunset upon
the opening of the new K-8 school in the City; and
WHEREAS, the Education-Schools Committee realizes that their role in bringing the
school to fruition is complete and has asked the Mayor to terminate the Committee at this time;
and
WHEREAS, the Education-Schools Committee has served the City well and will be
remembered for being instrumental in bringing a neighborhood school to the City.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Termination of Education-School Committee. The City Commission hereby
formally terminates the Education-Schools Committee.

Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all
things necessary to effectuate this Resolution.
Section 3.

Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon
PASSED and ADOPTED on this 1 ih day of April 2008.

No. 2008-1259, which terminated the Education/Schools Committee. Attached is a
copy of the approving legislation for your files.
As you know, the Educational/Schools Committee was created to assist the City
Commission in determining whether to pursue a public, private, or charter school for
the city. The Committee has accomplished this task and the new Sunny Isles Beach
Community School will open August 2008. The Commission had originally
scheduled the Committee to sunset in August 2008; however, the Commission has
decided to grant the request of the Committee members and terminate the Committee
at this time.
