HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2008-1267 RESOLUTION NO. 2008- I 2 l_ '7 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION TO SUNFLOWER SOCIETY, INC., IN THE AMOUNT OF TWO HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS ($250.00), IN MEMORY OF FORMER CITY COMMISSIONER CONNIE MORROW; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FORAN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Connie Morrow was elected to the first Sunny Isles Beach Commission in 1997 for a 4-year term as Commissioner, as well as serving as Vice Mayor; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Morrow was dedicated and committed to this community, creating the Fashion, Film, Entertainment and Production Council during her tenure; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Morrow founded the Sunflower Society in May 1971 which assists children and families with special needs; and WHEREAS, the Sunflower Society is a non-profit organization that has contributed monies over the years to the City of Sunny Isles Beach sponsoring children to attend the City's Day Camp Program that would otherwise not be able to attend due to financial constraints; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Morrow passed away on April 30, 2008, and the City wishes to contribute $250.00 to the Sunflower Society in her memory; and WHEREAS, Section 7.6 of the Sunny Isles Beach Municipal Charter provides that charitable contributions require the affirmative votes of at least four Commissioners. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Charitable Contribution. The City Commission hereby approves a charitable contribution to Sunshine Society, Inc. in the amount of Two Hundred Fifty Dollars ($250.00), in memory of former City Commissioner Connie Morrow. Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 3. Effective Date. RECOMMENDA TION: It is recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution contributing $250.00 to Sunflower Society, Inc. REASONS: Former City Commissioner Connie Morrow passed away on April 30, 2008. She was elected to the first Sunny Isles Beach City Commission in 1997 for a 4-year term as a Commissioner, as well as serving as Vice Mayor. Commissioner Morrow created the Fashion, Film, Entertainment and Production Council during her term which encouraged, promoted and maintained a positive environment for economic development of the fashion, film, radio, television, recording and production industries to work within Sunny Isles Beach. Commissioner Morrow founded the Sunflower Society in May 1971 which assists children and families with special needs. The Sunflower Society is a non-profit organization that has contributed monies over the years to the City of Sunny Isles Beach sponsoring children to attend the City's Day Camp Program that would otherwise not be able to attend due to financial constraints. The City wishes to contribute $250.00 to the Sunflower Society in her memory. This community is grateful for Commissioner Morrow's commitment and dedication to the City of Sunny Isles Beach throughout the years, and will sorely miss her. As you know, Dr. Morrow was one of the city's founding commissioners and we are deeply saddened by this loss.
