HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2009-1438 RESOLUTION NO. 2009- ~ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE "PRESTIGE CULTURAL SERIES AT BISCA YNE BAY CAMPUS 2009-2010" PROGRAM, AND AUTHORIZING A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE BISCA YNE BAY CAMPUS OF FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FlU), IN THE AMOUNT OF TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($2,500.00); AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION: PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is committed in participating and informing its residents of cultural events and activities taking place in and around our community; and WHEREAS, the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) of Florida International University (FlU) has invited the City to become a co-partner in the FlU Prestige Cultural Series at BBC 2009 - 2010 to engage our community in outstanding cultural experiences in the educational setting of the Biscayne Bay Campus; and WHEREAS, the Prestige Cultural Series at BBC will include four events: 1) a Classical Music Performance at BBC; 2) a Scholarly Debate and Panel Discussion at BBC; 3) a Gourmet Wine-Pairing Luncheon at BBC; and 4) Opera and Musical Theater in Concert at Sunny Isles Beach; and WHEREAS, the partnership between the City and FlU is mutually beneficial to our residents and visitors, and it can be incorporated into the City's existing Cultural Events Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Partnership. The City Commission hereby approves the partnership between the City and Florida International University (FlU). Section 2. Authority of City Manager. The City Commission directs the City Manager to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution, which includes but is not limited to donating $2,500.00 to Biscayne Bay Campus of FlU for the Prestige Cultural Series at BBC 2009 - 2010. Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 18th day of June 2009. The Prestige Cultural Series at BBC will include four events: 1) a Classical Music performance, 2) a Scholarly Debate and Panel Discussion, 3) a Gourmet Wine-pairing Luncheon, and, 4) Opera and Musical Theater in concert (to be held in Sunny Isles Beach). The events will be open to the all of the residents of the sponsoring communities and to donors of the Biscayne Bay Campus. Event Approximate Cost Nominal Admission Fee 1 CLASSICAL MUSIC PERFORMANCE - A musical $500 room rental + AV $20pp performance by an FlU or local performer in FlU's $2500 performance fee Mary Ann Wolfe Theater, Biscayne Bay Campus- $500 piano rental/tuning 7pm, Tuesday, November 3 or 10, 2009. Light $200 coffee refreshments will be served following the Pastries donated by Cost co performance. 2 SCHOLARLY DEBATE AND PANEL DISCUSSION- $500 honoraria $5pp Topic: Democratic Transitions of Power in the $500 room rental +AV Middle East. Audience interaction is encouraged. $200 coffee Mary Ann Wolfe Theater, Biscayne Bay Campus- Pastries donated by Costco 7pm, Thursday, December 3, 2009. Light refreshments will be served following the performance. 3 A GOURMET WINE-PAIRING LUNCHEON - $500 wine $30pp Students plan, create and serve a 3-course gourmet meal, which includes a salad, warm bread, choice of two entrees, iced tea, dessert and coffee/tea. The wine-pairing, which will be hosted by FlU's Harvey R. Chaplin Eminent Professor Barry Gump, will be paired with a unique selection of three wines. Limited to 60 people. School of Hospitality, Biscayne Bay Campus 12:00pm, date TBA in late Jan. 2010 4 OPERA AND MUSICAL THEATER IN CONCERT- $2500 performance fee paid $15pp - Young vibrant singers of The Lyric Orchestra will from ticket sales handled by Residents of perform favorite arias from beloved operas and SIB SIB; exhilarating musical theater pieces. At a location in Refreshments compliments of $20pp others Sunny Isles Beach - 7pm, early March 2010. SIB Refreshments will be served following. 1 We respectfully request a $2500 sponsorship from the City of Sunny Isles Beach to launch this new initiative on the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University. Together we will provide a much needed service to our communities - quality cultural activities and experiences at an affordable price. All net proceeds will benefit the students and programs on the Biscayne Bay Campus, through our BBC Excellence Fund and the Biscayne Bay Scholars Fund. Thank you for your consideration. REASONS: It is the desire of the City to provide residents and visitors with opportunities for culturally enriched programs that are convenient and reasonably priced. In partnership with FlU, this series will include 4 events as follows: a Classical Musical Performance at BBC, a Scholarly Debate and Panel Discussion at BBC, a Gourmet Wine-Pairing Luncheon at BBC, and the finale, an Opera and Musical Theater in Concert in Sunny Isles Beach. This donation, along with others, will keep the costs to attendees reasonable thereby making it accessible to all. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Further in-kind partnership will include marketing the event to Sunny Isles Beach residents and providing free shuttle transportation to and from the events at FlU Biscayne Bay Campus.
