HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2010-1527 RESOLUTION NO. 2010-_\ 5:;t '7 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO APPL Y FOR AND ACCEPT A MIAMI-DADE COUNTY METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION (MPO) TRANSPORTATION ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM (TEP) GRANT ON BEHALF OF THE CITY, IN AN AMOUNT OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS ($1,000,000.00), IN ORDER TO CONSTRUCT A PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE/GREENWAY WITH EMERGENCY ACCESS CAP ABILITY BETWEEN 172ND STREET AND 174TH STREET; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTION NECESSARY WITH RESPECT TO THE OBTAINING AND DISTRIBUTION OF GRANT MONIES, AS APPROPRIATE; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County's Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP) provides grants to governmental entities for transportation studies through the Unified Planning Work Program; and WHEREAS, the City's Comprehensive Plan sets forth specific transportation goals for the City to improve the safety and efficiency of roadway systems through transportation system management techniques; and WHEREAS, the City adopted Resolution No. 2003-502 applying for a MPO Grant for a transportation study for 172nd Street - 174 th Street in order to determine the feasibility and need for a pedestrian/bicycle bridge; and WHEREAS, the City desires to construct a pedestrian bridge/greenway with emergency access capability between 172nd Street and 174th Street; and WHEREAS, obtainment of a MPO/TEP grant in the amount of One Million Dollars ($1,000,000.00) would assist the City in offsetting the total cost of the bridge of which is Four Million Five Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($4,550,000.00), and the City would fund the remainder; and WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is desirous of applying for grant money in the amount of $1 ,000,000.00, for the bridge. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Authority to Apply For, Accept and Expend Grant Funds. The City Manager is authorized to apply for, accept and expend funds from an MPO/TEP grant, in an amount of $1,000,000.00, for a pedestrian bridge/greenway with emergency access capability between 172nd Street and 174th Street. The City Manager is authorized to take any and all action necessary with respect to the obtaining and distribution of grant monies, as appropriate. Section 3. REASONS: We have been tracking this grant opportunity for some time and it is finally here. The application deadline is March 5, 2010 with a maximum grant amount of $1,000,000. The notice of award is expected in August, 2010 and funds available in 261312014. This does not impact the project timeline as the funds can be reimbursed even after the bridge has been completed.
