We appreciate our past association with the City of Sunny Isles Beach and your support of the Biscayne Bay
Campus. We continue to offer quality public education to over 8,000 students, many who live within a 25 mile
radius of the campus. We also have many other amenities available to our community neighbors - an
extensive research library, recreation by the bay, lifelong learning classes, beautiful bike paths, and engaging
lectures and speakers. Your citizens have been loyal attendees to our cultural series in the past. We plan to
invite everyone back, as well as welcoming other arts lovers from your fair city.
We, therefore, respectfully request a $3000 sponsorship from the City of Sunny Isles Beach to be a Lead
Sponsor and to support this initiative on the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University.
Together we will provide a much needed service to our communities - quality cultural activities and
experiences at an affordable price. All net proceeds will benefit the students and programs on the Biscayne
Bay Campus, through our BBC Excellence Fund, and our School of Music.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to an ongoing partnership between the City of Sunny Isles
Beach and FlU's Biscayne Bay Campus.
Best regards,
~

MEMORANDUM

The Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM:
Susan Simpson, Cultural and Human Services Director
DATE:

RE:
Resolution to Partner with Florida International University in the Prestige
Cultural Series 20 10-20 II
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Commission consider the attached resolution to partner
with Florida International University to provide the "Prestige Cultural Series at Biscayne
Bay Campus 20 10-2011" in the donation amount of Three Thousand Dollars ($3,000).
REASONS:
The City desires to provide residents and visitors with a variety of culturally rich events
that are both affordable and convenient. This can be accomplished through support of
this program with FlU that will include 5 events as follows: a Chamber Music Concert, a
Latin Jazz Band Concert in Sunny Isles Beach, Piano Fantasies, a Gourmet Wine and
Food Pairing Luncheon with Klezmer Band Performance, and Arias and Ensembles from
Popular Operas. More detailed information about each event is included in the attached
proposal.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
In June 2009, the City was the Lead Sponsor in FlU's inaugural year of this series in the
amount of $2,500. This year's series will include one additional event at FlU Biscayne
Bay Campus and one event in Sunny Isles Beach, the Latin Jazz Band Ensemble in
January 2011. In an effort to make it more convenient for residents and visitors to attend
these events, tickets will be for sale in the Visitor's Center and at Pelican Community
Park as well as free transportation from the Sunny Isles Beach Government Center to the
Biscayne Bay Campus for the events hosted at FlU.
