PIPE HANDRAIL - Guiderail
515-1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The work covered under this section shall consist of providing Vinyl Plastic Railing
and related accessories as set forth on the drawings and in accordance with these
specifications.
515-2 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Single-Source Responsibility
All railing furnished under this section shall be by a single manufacturer responsible
for the proper installation and satisfactory performance 0 f the rai ling.
515-3 SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
The manufacturer of the railing shall provide sufficient service to insure the proper
installation 0 f the materials furnished.

Production Information:

Details of material and construction.
SAMPLES: Submit two (2) samples of railing, material, etc, in specified
color.
515-5 SHOP DRAWINGS
Submit shop drawings detailing fabrication and erection of the Railing System for
approval. Include plans, elevations, sections and details of the railing system and its
connections.

PRODUCTS
515-6.1 Railing, Toe Plate, Fittings and Accessories
515-6.1.1 Railing shall be high impact vinyl plastic.
515-6.2 Material: High quality, high impact vinyl railing systems using special
purpose rigid compounds designed for the applications requiring superior
weatherability, gloss, flame and smoke resistance, ultra-violet light
resistance and thermoformability.

515-6.3 Railing Description:
515-6.3.1

Top rail consists of a schedule 40 outer member (1.9" O.D.)
that runs continuous from post to post and a schedule 40
inner member (1.66" a.D.) that runs continuous for length or
rail, spliced as required.
Bottom and mid rails are the same as top except that inner
member is continuous from fitting to fitting.
Vertical post consists of an outer member (1.9" O.D.) that
runs continuous from rail to rail and rail to floor. Also, an
inner member (1.66" 0.0.) that runs continuous from top
rail to floor. For additional rigidity a schedule 40 (1.32"
O.D.) galvanized steel pipe runs continuous from top rail to
bottom of core hole.
515-6.4 Load Information: The railing shall be built to withstand a force of 100
Ibs per linear foot applied in any direction at the top and such that is will
resist a load of not less than 200 Ibs applied in any direction at any point
of the rail. The railing shall be built to also withstand a force of 800 Ibs
applied evenly in any direction at the top of an 8 foot sections.

Picket (intermediate post), when applicable, is the same
material as above rails, but at schedule 80 thickness. Pickets
are spaced such that no opening will pass a 6" sphere in
accordance with Standard Building Code. Alternatively,
pickets may be spaced such that no opening will pass a 4"
sphere in accordance with South Florida Building Code.
Toe Plate, when applicable, is 4" high, also made of High
Impact Vinyl Plastic fastened to posts, per manufacturer's
specifications using all stainless steel screws, bolts or other
fasteners.
All railing shall meet OSHA, ADA and BOCA codes
requiring a continuous, smooth, gripping surface where no
point on the rail is greater than 2.0" a.D.
515-6.5 Color: As selected by Broward County Public Works Department.

FABRICATION
515-7.1 Assembly, General: Install railings true to line and level with accurate
angles, round surfaces and closely butted fitting joints.
515-7.1.1
Remove burrs from exposed cut edges.
515-7.1.2
Form elbow bends and wall returns to uniform radius, free
from buckles and twists with smooth finished surfaces, or
use prefabricated bends and fittings.
515-7.1.3
Shop fabricate and solvent weld vinyl railing sections in the
longest section lengths practical to minimize cutting, joining
and solvent welding requirements in the field.
515-7.1.4
Provide slip type splice connections in all horizontal rails at
points where railing crosses structural expansions joints.
SHIPPING
Railing shall be packaged and shipped in such a manner as to protect material from
damage.
INSTALLATION
515-9.1 Handrail shall be installed in accordance with the drawings, specifications
and instructions provide by the manufacturer.
515-9.2 In the event of field modifications, all pipe cuts shall be square and
accurate for minimum joint gaps. Cuts shall be clean and straight, free of
"chamfer" from deburring, burrs and nicks.
515-9.3 Railing sections shall be spliced and solvent welded in accordance with
the manufacturer's standard instructions and recommendations.
515-9.4 Fastening to In-Place Construction: Adjust vinyl railing system work
before securing in place to ensure proper notching at butting joints and
concrete alignment throughout in length. Plumb posts in each direction.
Secure posts and rail ends to building construction as follows:
515-9.4.1
Anchor posts in concrete by means of non-shrink grout as
shown on the drawings and approved shop drawings.
515-9.5 Cutting, Fitting and Placement:
515-9.5.1
Set work accurately in location, align and plumb true, and
free ofrack, measured from established lines and levels.

Fit end connections accurately together to form tight hairline
joints. Do not cut or abrade the surfaces of units which have
been finished after fabrication and are intended for field
connection.

Maximum factory or field installed joint widths In railing
system is 1164 inch.
515-9.5.4
Tolerance for post plumbness is 1Il6 inch from top of post
to concrete or mounting bracket.
515-9.6 Cleaning: Clean dust, dirt and excess grout from railing and posts in
accordance with vinyl railing manufacturer's recommended cleaning
instructions.

515-6.3 Railing Description:
515-6.3.1
Top rail consists of a schedule 40 outer member (1.9" O.D.)
that runs continuous from post to post and a schedule 40
inner member (1.66" a.D.) that nms continuous for length or
rail, spliced as required.
515-6.3.2
Bottom and mid rails are the same as top except that inner
member is continuous from fitting to fitting.
515-6.3.3
Vertical post consists of an outer member (1.9" O.D.) that
runs continuous from rail to rail and rail to floor. Also, an
inner member (1.66" 0.0.) that runs continuous from top
rail to floor. For additional rigidity a schedule 40 (1.32"
O.D.) galvanized steel pipe runs continuous from top rail to
bottom of core hole.
515-6.4 Load Information: The railing shall be built to withstand a force of 100
Ibs per linear foot applied in any direction at the top and such that is will
resist a load of not less than 200 Ibs applied in any direction at any point
of the rail. The railing shall be built to also 'withstand a force of 800 Ibs
applied evenly in any direction at the top of an 8 foot sections.
515-6.4.1 Picket (intermediate post), when applicable, is the same
material as above rails, but at schedule 80 thickness. Pickets
are spaced such that no opening will pass a 6" sphere in
accordance with Standard Building Code. Alternatively,
pickets may be spaced such that no opening will pass a 4"
sphere in accordance with South Florida Building Code.
515-6.4.2 Toe Plate, when applicable, is 4" high, also made of High
Impact Vinyl Plastic fastened to posts, per manufacturer's
specifications using all stainless steel screws, bolts or other
fasteners.
515-6.4.3 All railing shall meet OSHA, ADA and BOCA codes
requiring a continuous, smooth, gripping surface where no

FABRICATION
515-7.1 Assembly, General: Install railings true to line and level with accurate
angles, round surfaces and closely butted fitting joints.

longest section lengths practical to minimize cutting, joining
and solvent welding requirements in the field.
515-7.1.4
Provide slip type splice connections in all horizontal rails at
points where railing crosses structural expansions joints.
SHIPPING
Railing shall be packaged and shipped in such a manner as to protect material from
damage.
INSTALLATION
515-9.1 Handrail shall be installed in accordance with .the drawings, specifications
and instructions provide by the manufacturer. .
515-9.2 In the event of field modifications, all pipe cuts shall be square and
accurate for minimum joint gaps. Cuts shall be clean and straight, free of
"chamfer" from deburring, burrs and nicks.
515-9.3 Railing sections shall be spliced and solvent welded in accordance with
the manufacturer's standard instructions and recommendations.
515-9.4 Fastening to In-Place Construction: Adjust vinyl railing system work
before securing in place to ensure proper notching at butting joints and
concrete alignment throughout in length. Plumb posts in each direction.
Secure posts and rail ends to building construction as follows:
515-9.4.1
Anchor posts in concrete by means of non-shrink grout as
shown on the drawings and approved shop drawings.
515-9.5 Cutting, Fitting and Placement:
515-9.5.1
Set work accurately in location, align and plumb true, and
free of rack, measured from established lines and levels.
