BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope. size. and cost) c. POINT OF CONTACT TELEPHONE NUMBER (305) 665-8852 The Miami Beach Library welcomes visitors from all over the world. Tucked in a campus setting that includes the Bass Museum and Collins Park, the new 45,000-sf structure does double-duty as a cultural arts center. Extensive programming throughout the year attracts large audiences for lectures, films, discussion groups, concerts, dance programs and children's events. Many of these activities are held in the street-level Cafe in the Park, which was converted from the former library's round lecture theater. The library is also a technology center, with banks of Internet-ready computers; study tables that are wired for computer terminals or laptops; and a computer training room. State-of-the-art telecommunications and audio-visual presentation equipment serve the auditorium. Security is maintained via closed-circuit television and monitors, with a separate entrance for the library's security staff. The mechanical design provides temperature and humidity control and helps lower energy costs by reducing airflow during non-peak hours. A separate outside air unit serves the auditorium and is operational only when this area is occupied. Outside air that is drawn into the building is pretreated to provide humidity control, and humidity levels are maintained at 45%-50%. All of the library's HVAC equipment and systems can be monitored and controlled by a single operator using the Direct Digital Control (DOC) system. Functionality and energy efficiency were also important criteria in the lighting design, which provides solutions to the library's diverse needs. For instance, the book stacks are illuminated by indirect two-lamp fluorescent fixtures which are pendant-mounted 18" below the ceiling. Specialized lighting also serves the reading tables and carousels, the arts and crafts room, conference rooms, the auditorium, lobby/gallery, offices and staff lounge. Battery backup provides power for emergency lighting and the fire alarm, security and telephone systems. 25.
