This 50 -acre interchange serves as a 954.561.6250 'Gateway' to both Cities, is cooperatively funded by FDOT under their own "Greening Gateways' initiative, Services and carries some of the highest daily traffic volumes in Conceptual Planning South Florida. Streetscape Design Signage has to be combined with a specialized palette of landscaping, hardscape elements, and significant public art features that tie to the historical theme. Large 'sail like' features work with simulated, grassed flow -ways, and dry 'boulder beds' to create a unique identity, limiting additional maintenance requirements. Additionally the site included two fully operational radio transmission towers with their continued operation incorporated into the site design. This will help fund on -going development and maintenance for the site with the largest portion of the project funding coming from Florida's FRDAP Grant program. Carter & Burgess is providing services for the new project including design and construction documents for two large and separate canine fitness courses with 18 exercise stations, new parking and lighting, picnic shelters, a management office kiosk, a pet wash -down station, as well as unique signage, fencing, and access control features to ensure safe and friendly operations. Construction commenced in 2005 and should be completed in 2006. Royal Palm Park Improvements The existing 30 -acre Royal Palm Park in the City of Oakland Park, is now more than 20 years old, and was scheduled for modernization and additions in 2004 due to some significant Florida FRDAP grant awards. Carter & Burgess, under our continuing services contract with the City, was selected to provide full design, permitting, and construction phase services. Plans for new facilities included new restrooms, new pedestrian and fitness trails, and a new fishing pier. The expansive list of improvements included resurfacing for basketball, volleyball, and bocce courts, parking area expansion and resurfacing, new roofing for existing picnic shelters, and playground surface for safety and handicap up- grades. Carter & Burgess is now underway with master design and subsequent bid documents for two major City entry locations along this historic highway. Plans currently call for significant signage features to be designed to compliment the adjacent pedestrian and vehicular traffic routes and incorporate new streetscape elements that work with the Gateway features, extending their identity into adjacent linear parks totaling more than one mile. In particular, the plans will allow for future 'Public Art' installations in strategically placed plaza locations. The design challenges in this environment include a host of safety and aesthetic issues related to the gateway locations along the FEC Railroad and the accommodation of existing mass transit stops into the new design. The City has already secured grant funding of more than $300,000 and with the completed plans later this year will seek additional funding support from the developers in the redeveloping downtown core that will benefit from this project's implementation. The 3.5 -acre site is planned to be converted into two twelve -story luxury condominium towers with 172 units that will provide all parking in a structured, partially underground facility below the twin towers. An expansive and upscale design for the main lobby and amenities areas will link the entire site into one functional project, resulting in a unique arrival experience to residents and visitors alike. The site challenges included a design approach to integrate and capitalize on a six -foot drop across the 'barrier island' site and limitations of shadow effects on the adjacent properties from the new towers. Carter & Burgess provided planting design, irrigation design, lighting placement and coordination, as well as illustrative graphics for community presentations. There were significant concerns from surrounding property owners but all recognized the value a mixed -use site could provide with upscale residential units providing an appropriate transition to the commercial 'key corner' use. Carter & Burgess was able to complete the design work in an extremely short time frame and help the project win its final approvals in early 2005. The project is situated in one of Central Broward's minority cities and was a former industrial site that provided telecommunications services worldwide. The County recently purchased a 100 -acre former commercial site south of the 'Georgetown' site and has progressed with plans for a new regional park serving the unique recreational needs of this area's Caribbean residents. The owner and developer of the site with the cooperation of the City have sought a land use amendment for the site to allow for multi - family residential development. Carter & Burgess is designing features, such as an extended entry sequence and landscaping with a strong style, which will set the appropriate theme for this new community. In 2005, plans were completed and the project is working through the City and County approvals process. Key members of the design team participated in a charette and public input process, led by internationally known town planner Andres Duany, F.A.I.A, principal in the firm of Duany Plater - Zyberk & Company. The process saw the project grow from initial conceptual studies to final design with focused public involvement throughout. The Town Center envisions a mix of residential, civic and retail land uses located within comfortable walking distances of each other. Carter & Burgess is also providing feasibility, platting, construction design, environmental, wetlands coordination, flood studies, construction staking, construction administration, city coordination, Federal Emergency Management Agency coordination and Army Corps of Engineer Coordination. Services Planning Landscape Architecture Public Involvement Preparation of Construction Documents Environmental Wetlands Coordination Flood Studies Sacramento, CA Description Carter & Burgess worked with the Sacramento Housing & Redevelopment Agency to redevelop Del Paso Nuevo, one of Sacramento's most significant community revitalization projects. The $10.5- million project initiated the transformation of the blighted 150 -acre, absentee -owned neighborhood in Del Paso Heights into a homeownership community for more than 500 residents. The firm prepared a comprehensive master plan, development guidelines, an infrastructure plan, and a phasing strategy. The team designed landscape architecture, drainage facilities, parks and community centers. The team also secured planning department entitlements and provided community outreach through design charettes and media relations. Del Paso Nuevo combines "New Urbanism" principles with traditional urban design practices to create a unique, pedestrian - friendly neighborhood that emphasizes safety and security. The Master Plan and Development Guidelines envision a coherent neighborhood with a sense of community and character where residents can walk to nearby schools, parks, shops, and transit stations. Services Master Planning Streetscape Design Landscape Architecture Drainage Design Park Design Continued Civic uses form the core of the neighborhood. Streets are well defined with walkways, trees, and buildings that connect residents to parks, shops, and civic uses with safe, well - lighted sidewalks. Pedestrians take priority over automobiles. Homes are located close to the streets, with visible front doors and recessed garages. Silver Eagle Road - the main street through the redevelopment - showcases special paving brick patterns and stamped asphalt. The firm used traffic calming devices to make the area more pedestrian friendly. The firm also designed color concrete and other site furnishings, such as tree grates, cobble pavers, and lighted entry signs. Nuevo Park sits in the heart of the redevelopment project. The project team designed a stormwater retention basin, a soccer field, and a band shell stage for the park. A grand staircase entry entices people to leave the street and enter the park. The firm created a landscape design featuring native plantings to cut down on water use and mowing maintenance. The plants included deer grass, California poppies, cottonwood trees, river birch trees, sweet gum trees, and sycamore trees. Gateway Park creates a southern border for the redevelopment. It features a creek, a stormwater retention basin, walking paths, and benches. Wetland plants were used in the basin, while the hillside showcases non - irrigated wildflowers and grasses. M Fort Worth, TX Description Working with the public and private partnership of the City of Fort Worth and Bass Brothers Enterprises, Carter & Burgess, Inc. provided planning, landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the redevelopment of Fort Worth's historic Main Street. The street, which has been reconstructed to achieve the effect of its original red brick surface, visually links the downtown area from the historic courthouse at the north end of downtown to the Tarrant County Convention Center at the south end. The focal point of the southern end of the street is a large inset granite star designed by Carter & Burgess - a feature that echoes the patriotic Texas image of the courthouse to the north. This project involved traffic analysis, streetscape design and amenities improvements and was awarded a Consulting Engineer's Council Award of Excellence. As consultants to Bass Brothers Enterprises, Carter & Burgess, Inc., also provided services for the rehabilitation of a two -block area on Main Street. The project, known as Sundance Square, involved restoring 11 buildings to their original turn -of- the - century character. Special structural consideration had to be given to support the fragile historical storefront walls during the construction of the all -new internal structures. All electrical and mechanical systems were designed to conform to the public codes. The firm also provided construction phase services. Within the past few years, Sundance Square and Main Street have brought Fort Worth national attention. They have also helped the city to recapture the western heritage which is so much a part of its past - and which now seems to be very much a part of its future. Although mechanical, electrical, fire protection and plumbing design services are still being provided within several of the historic buildings, Carter & Burgess was awarded a Texas Consulting Engineers Council Award of Excellence for the project's structural design. s o ''cverzlv-oly '40ror-Cl7a6e Sacramento, CA Description This promenade links historic Sacramento to the Crocker Art Museum and other downtown Sacramento attractions.
