HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2016-2642 RESOLUTION NO. 2016-'z,0y z, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION TO MIAMI BEACH MARIAN TOWERS, INC., IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS ($10,000.00), TO CONTINUE TO EXPAND THEIR EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL PROGRAMS; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach has a tradition of participating and assisting various social services programs of interest and benefit to its residents and fellow man; and WHEREAS, Miami Beach Marian Towers, Inc., located at 17505 North Bay Road, is a not-for-profit housing development within the City of Sunny Isles Beach, and provides educational and social programs for their residents and residents within the City; and WHEREAS, Miami Beach Marian Towers is a senior low income housing apartment subsidized by the federal government's HUD (Housing and Urban Development Division) and owned and operated by Catholic Health Services, and is committed to serving the community as a whole, regardless of one's race, religion, ethnicity, or age; and WHEREAS,the City wishes to provide a charitable contribution to Miami Beach Marian Towers, Inc., in an amount not to exceed Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.00), which may be used for the purchase and installation of computers for a computer lab, expansion of the English Citizenship classes, senior exercise and yoga classes, and expansion of the in-house hot lunch program to offer a daily hot meal to more residents. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Donation. The City Commission hereby authorizes a charitable contribution to Miami Beach Marian Towers, Inc., in an amount not to exceed Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.00) to continue to expand their educational and social programs for Marian Towers located at 17505 North Bay Road, Sunny Isles Beach. Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution. Section 3. Effective Date. We will be thinking of all the new friends that we have made through our life's journey. On behalf of the more than 250 elderly residents and staff who reside and/or work at Miami Beach Marian Towers we want you to know that we are proud and grateful that our great City of Sunny Isles Beach is considering Miami Beach Marian Towers for this year Elderly Services Grant. As you may be aware we are a non-for profit HUD, elderly housing apartment building, serving low-income families. Our funds are very limited. Our number one goal is to keep our building and community safe and secure and provide services to our wonderful residents with in our community. This grant will allow us to expand our services to our many residents as well as the community. Services such as: • Purchase new Computers with Wi-Fi and offer classes; • Expansion of our English and Citizenship classes; • Add more senior exercise and yoga classes; • Expansion of our in-house hot lunch program; • Purchase a four seats golf cart to help patrol the property; • Install security cameras. This grant will definitely enhance the quality of life and security of our resident community. It will afford them the independence that they so greatly need to keep them from becoming homebound and shut-ins. Our deepest heartfelt thanks for considering Miami Beach Marian Towers for this year's grant award. We truly hope and anticipate a favorable response. Thank you for taking the time to consider us. REASONS: Miami Beach Marian Towers is a not-for-profit HUD elderly housing apartment building in Sunny Isles Beach. This complex houses over 250 residents, most with limited mobility and resources to lead a social life outside of the complex. Through the Social Services Coordinator of Marian Towers, programs are organized to offer quality of life activities for residents and neighbors on site for the direct benefit of their residents, our residents. These programs are offered year round and are available to all residents as well as their guests, most of whom are also Sunny Isles Beach residents in neighboring homes. It is recommended to designate $10,000 of funds budgeted as a donation for the purpose of financial assistance for these programs. Our donation will go a long way to directly serve our residents most in need. Funds will be used to purchase and install computers for a computer lab along with instruction classes on their use, expansion of the English Citizenship classes, senior exercise and yoga classes, and expansion of the in-house hot lunch program to offer a daily hot meal to more residents.
