A RESOLUTION OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION
BOARD OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA,
SUPPORTING THE CONCEPT OF THE RECONSTRUCTION
AND DESIGN OF THE NEWPORT FISHING PIER;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the property known as the Newport Fishing Pier (the "Pier ") located at
16701 Collins Avenue was originally built in 1936 and has long been a major attraction for local
residents and tourists, attracting over one million visitors; and
WHEREAS, the Pier was designated as a historic site by the Miami -Dade County
Historic Preservation Board on January 21, 1982, and re- designated as a historic site by the
Sunny Isles Beach Historic Preservation Board on June 6, 2005, and by the City Commission on
July 14, 2005, and
WHEREAS, the Pier experienced major structural damage during Hurricane Wilma in
2005, and has been closed to the public due to unsafe conditions; and
WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach (the "City ") recently entered into a
public /private partnership with Newport Operating Corporation to share certain costs for the
design, removal and replacement of the entire Pier, both east and west of the erosion control line;
and
WHEREAS, the City will control the entire project, but will provide Newport Operating
Corporation and its President Dr. Robert M. Cornfeld, with an opportunity to provide input on the
final design; and
WHEREAS, the City Manager reported on the project status to the City's Historic
Preservation Board at its meeting held on April 15, 2008, at which time the City's engineering
consultants presented architectural renderings for the project.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION
BOARD OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Incorporation of Recitals. The foregoing recital paragraphs are hereby ratified
and confirmed as being true and the same are hereby made part of this Resolution.
Section 2. Expression of Support. The Historic Preservation Board of the City of Sunny
Isles Beach hereby supports the concept of the reconstruction and design of the Pier, with the
following recommendations:
(a) that the Pier be a barrier -free facility;
(b) that the Pier be functionally aesthetic;
(c) that concrete dyed brown be used to make the Pier's structure resemble wood;

(d) that the Pier have a restaurant;
(e) that there be a "catwalk" area around the perimeter of the restaurant;
(f) that there be a 16 foot cross section to traverse the area of the Pier;
(g) that an observational area be considered to accommodate fishing, bait and tackle;
(h) that a bench/seating area be considered in the walking area of the Pier;
(i) that the Pier have an area that flanges out at the end;
(j) that the Pier have an area for Ocean Rescue and Police personnel on the upper
level of the restaurant;
(k) that the entrance to the Pier have adequate light and visibility;
(1) that the entrance to the Pier have handicap access;
(m) that the Pier be open to the general public, including residents and tourists; and
(n) that consideration be given to a possible lighthouse element, either at the front of
the Pier, or offsite, depending on cost and functionality.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution will become effective upon adoption.
